For most dogs that we rescue, a great new forever home is just around the corner.
However, for some, the life they knew before they met us has affected them so much, they cannot become part of a new family.
They spend their lives being cared for at the sanctuary or with specialy placed fosterers.
Your sponsorship is vital and will help ensure they get the best lives, veterinary care and food.
As a DAWG sponsor, you will receive a special sponsor pack for your chosen dog and regular updates from us on how they are getting on at the Sanctuary. Your support is greatly appreciated and will really make a difference to their lives.
HOW SPONSORSHIP WORKS:
Every sponsorship costs €52 per year per dog (thats 1 Euro per week) and in return you will receive a special package about your sponsored dog regular updates about how they are getting on and of course the latest updates from our
CORK DAWG newsletter.
RODNEY

Rodney's
Story
Rodney
has been in foster since he was 3 weeks old, having been
rescued with his mother and siblings from a tough situation.
His siblings were rehomed but his fosterer noticed there
was something not quite right with Rodney. After many tests,
Rodney was dignosed with Wobblers Syndrome. Wobbler syndrome
(cervical (neck) vertebral instability) is caused by compression
of the cervical spinal cord as a result of cervical vertebral
malformation-malarticulation or instability. Basically sometimes
Rodneys legs let him down and sometimes he falls or loses
function in his back legs. Therefore he will stay with Jane
and her family permanently in long term foster. Your sponsorship
will help towards his veterinary care, and food.

KEEPER

Keeper's
story
Keeper was
handed into us some time ago by her owners. They either
didnt know or didnt tell us at the time but Keeper had Chiari
Syndrome which basically means her skull is too small for
her brain. Keepers symptoms will get worse over time and
we are really hoping she can have a couple of years of love
with us. She is currently with Patricia who tells us her
symptoms (pins and needles, scratching) are being controlled
with meds and at the moment she is not suffering. The vet
tells us that when she is too uncomfortable to sleep at
night we will have to make a call. But until that time as
you can see Keeper is comfortable and being well looked
after

SOPHIE
|
Sophie's story
Sophie
is a 6 year old Bull Mastiff. She is the most gentle and
beautiful of dogs. Her lovely eyes follow you everywhere
and all she wants is to curl up in her bed near you and
potter around the garden. Sophie was handed in to the sanctuary
with a problem of incontinence. After further tests and
examination it was established that Sophie also had a very
bad urinary tract infection which needed attention. We now
know that her incontinence is a hormone problem usually
exacerbated by stress. She will need long term medication
for this problem but generally she is doing very well now
in her long term foster home with Trish and her family in
Dungourney Co Cork. She is adored by everyone and so far
the periods of incontinence have become less and less.

Polly
is a new member of our Sponsor a Dog Programme. She is not
even 6 months old and it is with sadness that we cannot let
her go to her forever home.
Polly
was rescued from atrocious conditions, out in all elements,
no shelter, very little food and covered in mange. We can
honestly say Polly would be dead by now if neighbours hadn’t
intervened and contacted us. They were appalled by the treatment
of Polly, her siblings and other dogs on the property.
Polly
had kennel cough which developed into pneumonia. She was definitely
the weakest of the bunch and it was discovered shortly afterwards
that she had heart disease.
Polly
could have months or a year or so to live. Miracle of miracles
she could live for years and go against the odds. Polly needs
regular vet visits and is on heart medication. She lives with
Carole her foster Mum, 2 foster collie sisters and 4 cats
where she is absolutely idolised and adored. She can be a
right little diva and lives for her food! She sleeps in the
bed at night with Carole and probably assumes she is almost
human at this stage. She is a very affectionate girl who loves
nothing more than cuddling up on the couch with you under
a throw and snoozing while keeping one eye on the TV. If you

Bertie
 |
Meet
Bertie the Cork DAWG Mascot!
Bertie
is our resident mascot at the Sanctuary.
He is a fantastic dog and brings many a smile to our faces.
Bertie cannot be rehomed as he is afraid of strangers especially
men due to the difficulties he encountered before he was rescued.
So
his home is with the many rescue dogs and he is there to protect
them and make sure they feel welcome during their time spent
in the Sanctuary.
Oh and we forgot to mention..... and he is the boss of them
all!
We love Bertie so much and the fact that he is well, comfortable
here, and knows he can trust us makes it all worthwhile everyday.

WHISPER |
Whisper
Whisper is a magnificent two year old greyhound. Like many Irish greyhounds,
Whisper came to our sanctuary as she was to slow on the track and her owner no longer wanted her.
Whisper is a very shy gentle girl. When she came to the sanctuary first she was terrified of everyone. When anyone approached, Whisper ran into the corner, head down and shook all over. It was so sad to see her. However after many months of kisses, cuddles and reassuring hugs form our volunteers, whisper began to trust and started to come out of her shell. Whisper loves the volunteers at the sanctuary as she knows them well, but when strangers visit she runs and hides shaking in the corner again. We felt that Whisper had been through enough and as she loved the sanctuary and saw it as her safe place, her home we all agreed to rehome her would put too much unecessary stress on her. Our sanctuary is now Whispers home. She is absolutely adored by everyone, but particularly by our mascot Bertie. Both Bertie and Whisper are inseperable, and to see how they have become soulmates would bring tears of joy to your eyes. Whisper has a busy time at the sanctuary. Together with Bertie every morning after breakfast, they must have their constitutional walk around the sanctuary checking all is well.
Whisper has a big role in minding the puppies, she adores
them. She's very good with cats too! Any sick or troubled
dog who comes to the sanctuary, whisper immediately reassures
them and offers them comfort and solace. As you see Whisper
is indeed a very special dog. She is happy and loved at the
sanctuary, and we hope she will be with us for many years
to come.

Ruth

Ruth is around five years old as is a very pretty Springer Spaniel. She
was straying in an area known for high levels of animal cruelty.
She was in a deplorable condition. Our volunteer tried to catch
Ruth but she ran away terrifed. She told a very kind lady who lived
in the area about Ruth and she said she would do her best to catch
her. She began to feed Ruth and gradually she gained her trust.
About a week later Ruth trusted this lady enough to go into the
safety of her back garden. Our volunteer went immediately to get
Ruth. Poor Ruth was absolutely terrifed and we will never forget
the look of sheer terror in her eyes. What had this poor dog been
through? We put her in the car and told her that we wouldn't hurt
her. Despite our kind words she shook uncontrollably with fear.
We brought her straight to the vet and we were on a high that Ruth
was safe at last. However our joy was short lived as the vet gave
us very bad news. She said that the colour and size of Ruths teats
indicated mammary cancer. She felt that Ruth had been bred and bred
from and then abandoned as chances were her owners couldn't get
her in pup anymore. From the first moment we met Ruth we loved her,
despite her fear she was one of the most gentle dogs we had ever
met. We desperately wanted to save her. We told the vet to go ahead
with the tests for the mammary tumours.
We took Ruth to the sanctuary while we waited for the biopsy results. With Bertie
by her side teaching her, she began to get to know everyone at the
sanctuary. In no time she learned to trust, love and most importantly
Ruth learned how to live again.
Sadly when Ruths results came back some weeks later, there was no good news .
We were told she had mammary cancer. The vet could not tell us how
long Ruth would live. It could be as little as months or a few years We
were all devastated. How could this happen, just as Ruth had a chance
to live again, to get this news was so unfair. However we looked
at Ruth and she was happy and healthy and she was alive. We made
the decision not to rehome Ruth, as with her prognosis we wanted
her close to us. All this happened almost two years ago and Ruth
is still with us and is in terrific form. She is on long term foster
with one of the girls who works at the sanctuary. As long as Ruth
is with us she will safe, treasured and will be a special member
of our sanctuary family.

Chloe |
Chloe
Chloe
is the new addition to the sponsor a pet program. She is a two year old Lab cross who came into our care six months ago after she was found wandering the streets. When she arrived to the sanctuary we noticed that her front leg was very lame
and she was hopping along rather than walking. We took it
to be x-rayed and were told that the damage could not be repaired,
she will always have a slight deformity. This doesn't stop
her running though and she loves running around with the other
dogs in her foster home. Chloe is a very affectionate dog but is still very timid and needs rehabilitation.
