BAILEY

Dear D.A.W.G,
I thought it was about time that we updated you on Bailey (formerly Paddy) 3 year old Black Labrador cross. We have had Bailey for about 7 weeks now, he has a great temperament, well trained on and off the lead. We have had him micro-chipped and tagged for security, he does have a tendency to roam especially with our other DAWG dog Daisy (small Jack Russell cross). They were sited by our neighbour heading into Newmarket about a mile and a half from home. We travelled down and they were so pleased to see us and get in the car. A few days later they got out again and we received a phone call from a gentleman saying he stopped his car to get some paperwork off the back seat and the two dogs jumped in, would we like him to deliver them back home. We went and picked them up, the gentleman was laughing about the whole episode.
The pair get on so well together, it was the best decision we made to let Bailey choose us!!! Have attached a photo of them both.
Thank you for the work you are doing and hope you soon find new accommodation.

Steve and Jayne.

BENSON

Everybody Loves Benson!

Hi Vicky, Angela and everyone at DAWG Cork. Thought you might like to see how I am doing in West Cork since I was adopted by Margaret and Chris and their two rescue cats Omar and Felix. I was so tiny when I came here and everyone was very worried about me because I had been in contact with a dreadful virus called Parvo but thankfully I did not contract the virus much to the relief of everyone. My new family simply adore me and shower me with lots of hugs and kisses which I love. I am told I have a great appetite for one so little and am particularly partial to chicken. I love my walks on the beach and by the river and have made many friends here including a cute sheep dog called Jess and a Kerry Blue called Rascal who is teaching me the ways of the world

I get on very well with the cats though they fail to understand my outgoing personality and are a little haughty. Still, my adoptive folks are crazy about me and everyone I meet falls madly in love with me. I have been told that I am funny so I ham it up a bit and pretend to do very silly things which seem to cause great mirth. I smile inwardly when Chris says that it’s not possible to have brains and beauty though Margaret does not seem amused!!

They asked me to send a big THANK YOU! to Vicky for letting them adopt me as I have brought such joy to their lives. They also now want to find me a permanent companion. I can’t wait!

CHIEF (previously Duke)

Since Chief arrived he has been the most wonderful dog and is always well behaved and a credit to his breed. Unfortunately the week after he arrived our poor old collie dog lost his fight for life and we had to say goodbye to him, having Chief has stopped me moping about it as his needs still had to be met. I usually go for a two mile run in the morning before I go to work and he then sleeps in the flowerbeds til lunchtime when he goes over the park for a quick run around and say hello to his mates, he then gets another long walk in the evening. He has just started his dog training and is doing his bronze award for his good citizen certificate, the sit stays still need a bit of work but he is coming on tremendously, everyone who meets him loves him and at home he is a big soppy mummies boy and follows you everywhere! Not easy sitting on the loo with a large dog trying sit on your lap!!. He will be going on holiday with us in a couple of weeks to cornwall so I think he will have great time on the beach, our other dogs had a great time last year and its how I would like to remember them. We will keep updated from time to time to let you know what hes been up to. Also we would like to how we can help do some fundraising for you. Regards  Dolores, Annabel. And Chief  xxx

TABU (previously Ali)

Tabu is with our family for the three weeks today and we are so grateful to DAWG for allowing her to be part of our family. When she came to us initially she was listless, detached and insular both physically and in attitude, if we made eye contact she would avert her eyes and pretend we weren’t there and if we went to touch her she would either avoid or just freeze rigidly. Her silence was deafening. She was the type of dog who , no matter how much you wanted to , you could not shower with affection because she was so afraid, it would have been cruel. We knew her background but it was heart wrenching to see the effect it had on our gorgeous dog. Three weeks on and Tabu had made and continues to make progress on a daily basis, she loves her cuddles, her naps in the sunshine, her walks, her bed, her bones, and this week she is starting to play games , get excited and bark. She has given our other dog a new lease of life and they are now inseparable. Despite her deafness she already understands basic commands.

What a great blessing and what a great feeling we have to see this little dog transform her attitude from being afraid of everybody and everything to loving everybody and being curious about everything. Thank you so much Vicki and Jane and everyone at DAWG for giving us Tabu.

SCOUT

Fostering dogs is an emotional rollercoaster, the highs are brilliant, the lows heartbreaking but believe me the good far outweighs the bad. You get presented with ‘mans best friend’who, underneath the matted fur, empty eyes and aura of confusion, simply wants to be loved. Some are easy to handle and like a proud parent you send them to their forever homes knowing you have done your bit to convince this animal that not all humans are nasty….and then there are the ones who have been so brutalized that hands mean hitting and humans mean harm. This is what Scout was, totally, absolutely, traumatically 100% petrified of people. These don’t just touch your heart, they wrench it forcibly from your chest. Scout did this to me the first time I met her, the first time she bit me, the first time she wagged her tail and the first time she ran to greet me. She’s part of our family now because, quite simply, that’s where she belongs and its her turn to welcome new scared dogs into our home and help put them back together. If you can’t commit to 10 years or so for a dog but have time, energy and love to spare try fostering. Mutual respect, unconditional love and a happy wagging tail – priceless.

CHARLIE

This is Charlie (previously Alfie). We got him from the D.A.W.G, They fostered him until we took him in. We got him in a bad state. He was covered in knots but he was really friendly. Now he loves chasing the cats and he chews on everything! He loves his long walks down the woods and down the amenity walk. He’s a cheeky pup who LOVES socks and licking people!!

Love from Karin!

AMBER

Hello,
I wanted to contact you to say thank you for what you did for our gorgeous dog Amber before we even new about her. We adopted her two weeks ago today and are just delighted with her progress. When we initially met her she was very anxious and scared. We visited her five or six times over a week until she became more confident with us, and then were able to take her home. She has grown in confidence every day since and now even keeps wagging her tail happily whilst we stroke her! She is very clever and has alredy learned to sit, wait and walks beautifully on her leash. She gets on really well with one of our cats, the other is not too sure yet, but she is doing everything right and is very repectful and polite with him. We are taking things slowly with her, as she still gets worried in some situations, but on the whole we already know that we have found the perfect dog for us. She is such a gentle and kind little girl. So, thank you so so much for taking care of her and making it possible for her to join our family!
With kind regards, Jenny Esp

LILY

We LOVE  Lily. She is absolutely gorgeous. She is my first experience of a Golden Retriever/Labrador and I was amazed how devoted she is. From the first afternoon we felt as though we had her from puppyhood. She settled in beautifully - bosses George (our other ‘rescue’ dog) and is a great member of the family. It's lovely to have a dog who can enjoy our twenty acres. She is completely bonded to me and lies at my feet while I am working on a book on my computer and follows me everywhere. She is a dog who loves to please and this makes her very easy to handle. The whole family adore her.

My grandson and daughter were here when we got her (and stayed an extra week because of the airlines/volcano problem). Shane is just seven and he had a wonderful holiday with Lily. She is such an easy dog. She obeyed him all the time and he could take her up the hill to play ball and down to the lake to swim after a frisbee. I wish poor George would do the same thing, but he is still a little insecure. He doesn't mind going into the little fenced garden outside the kitchen door, but otherwise he prefers to go for walks on the lead. If you take him off the lead in the fields he runs for home!

Many thanks for two such lovely dogs as George and Lily.

MAC

Hi DAWG,

I wanted to add Mac's story to your happy endings page.
We wanted to foster Mac as a puppy over Christmas 2009. The day we collected him he got really sick and was only at home with us for 2hours. It turned out he had Parvo and so did his brother. Mac was so sick that we didn't think he would survive and unfortunately his brother didn't. Once he was well enough we took him home. He had to be fed on white fish and boiled potato for weeks as his body couldn't handle any other food and he was a small bundle of black fluff. He is nearly 8 months old now and very healthy. He has bonded with our other 2 dogs Jess and Ben Ben and they love playing together. Mac is a gentle well behaved boy who loves to go for walks. When we get to the green in Waterpark he takes his lead out of your hand and walks himself. He gets a lot of looks and laughs from passers by. He loves children and is really good with my niece Emily (2yrs) and friends Ciara (7yrs)and Leah (5yrs). He's our gentle bear. Thanks to DAWG for all the great work you do and bringing Mac into our lives. Louise and Kevin X

WOODY

Just thought you might like an update on Woody our GS. We got Woody on a bitterly cold snowy day last January. He was very poorly, malnourished and didn't have a lot of hair to

keep him warm in that weather. At the time we didn't know if we would be able to keep him because we also have a cat and we were worried they wouldn't get along. Reluctantly we gave him back and he was to be rehomed in England. We were heartbroken to see him go off and later that evening we contacted you to see if we could get him back. Thanks to yourselves he arrived back two days later and he is transformed.   It took until now to build him up and get his coat in a good condition. He is still very nervous and is slowly "learning" to relax and have fun.
Thanks again to DAWG for bringing Woody back. He is a joy to have and we are delighted with him....(and he's getting on great with the cat!)...
I've attached some recent photographs of Woody....
regards,Debra and Peter

CHARLIE

Charlie is a very happy old boy. Avril a long time volunteer with DAWG has taken him under her wing with her 4 other dogs, where he will live out the rest of his days by the sea. Avril tells us 'He loves lying in the sun with his new friends my 4 other dogs. He is such a happy dog and so good. His wounds and sores are healing well but we still have a bit to go with his skin condition but he is much improved. He loves his walk on the beach and he will stay in the water as long as I keep throwing sticks. Hopefully he will have many years here and he can now retire in comfort.'

RUBY

Ruby a staffie x was up for adoption for some time. She had been rescued from a cruelty case and had a very hard life. She knew very little love and had many litters of pups. For some unknown reason there were no enquiries for this girl at all. In the meantime her foster carers were falling in love with her. It must have been fate as her foster home has now become her forever home. She is the most unassuming undemanding girl you could meet, who crawls towards you on her belly for love and affection. She asks for nothing and gives all her love in return. She rarely barks and gets on great with Honey her new sister! Here they are sunning themselves in the garden. They are inseparable. She is the treasure that was overlooked and will spend the rest of her days being lavished with love and cuddles.

HEIDI

Heidi was found as a very nervous stray. 2 weeks ago she went to a wonderful home in Wexford with another German Shepherd called Boots. We recently received an email from Wexford -

'She has settled in so well!  Herself and Boots are absolute best buddies now.  She is loving the country life and their walks through our forestry - which happen usually twice a day! She's been in for her shots and a once-over and is in fine form.

Thanks again for everything - we're really delighted to have her and love to her bits!  Hope you enjoy the pictures'.
All the best,
Reg and Deirdre

REGAN

Hi , Just thought you may like an update from Regan, a tri coloured collie cross you took in  in Feb 2010. He was sent to Snetterton, Norfolk in March. He had surgery to remove a damaged kidney and was still in the hospital wing when we visited. I fell in love with him at first sight, he reminded me of the collies I had grown up with on my Grandad's farm in Westmeath. We adopted him at the end of March and he has been enhancing our lives for just over 2 weeks now.     He is a beautiful boy, very affectionate and willing to learn the rules and fit in with his new "pack". He has some behaviour quirks which the animal behaviourist at Snetterton attributes to bad treatment, but he is growing more affectionate and confident by the day.  He is in a home where he gets lots of attention, affection, and plenty of walks and we are rewarded ten fold. Can't imagine how such a super dog became a stray. Thanks for all the great work you do. Hoping to attach a picture of Regan in our local wood.  Regards, Maggie and John Drake, Norfolk England

JESSIE

Message from Colum age nine;

Thanks to Margaret and Patricia for bringing Jessie all the way from Cork.
Jessie has changed a lot since the first day she got here, she was very nervous and jumped at every loud noise.
She loves long walks by the river and in the Clare Glens, she tries to make friends with every one she meets, people and dogs.
She is very gentle and kind and we all love her very much.

BLARNEY

Dear All, I have Blarney a JRT or as my friend calls him a Jack Russell terrorist lol. I got Blarney from Dogs Trust at Canterbury in Kent his vaccination card says he is 4 years old I know he comes from you as I have his vaccination card. I went to dogs trust to take some toys food blankets etc over just after Xmas as I already have 2 rescue golden retriever that come from Ireland Daisy & Charlie the were rescued by Irish Retriever rescue and shipped over both have had bad life's not now spoiled and loved.
Anyway I have always loved JRT and I saw poor Blarney in a kennel with another JRT she was only about 6 months old and she was jumping all over him he looked so depressed poor boy so would could I do my husband said no we can't have another dog !! poor Blarney had not been looked at they think due to his leg and hip problem's. But you should see him run now more like a greyhound and he can jump on our bed ok and chase cats and frogs in the garden.
He has been going to training school to socialise him and he is one of the best in the class he takes his bronze next week and I had not sent this e-mail yet and he passed his bronze last night with flying colours.:-)
I love my dogs they are my life and when I retire I hope to foster as well and pray I am not a failed foster.
Regards Maggie

LOLA

Just thought I'd update you on Lola's progress!
When she arrived she was so nervous and did an awful lot of chewing of doors but now she's more than settled and like another child!
She's so affectionate and gentle and loves to play. She most definitely likes her home comforts and frequents the couch and anywhere cosy.We absolutely adore her and couldn't imagine not having her around. I would highly recommend a Staffie for a family dog for their sheer gentleness, loyalty and intelligence.
Thanks a million for all your good advice and for giving us Lola

BRODY

Hi All,

Brody (was Brady) is settling in very well and gets on great with all our family and all our dogs too. He is making a great difference in wolfhound Cait's life and she is taking much more interest in things and her great depression is lifting at last!! She is once again a happy dog, and Brody just thinks life's a blast, loving his new toys and playing like a puppy, we love him. He is putting on weight and will be going to the vet in about one weeks time for neutering and we are having him microchipped at the same time. I will keep you updated on Brody's new life.

Chris (West Cork).

ROCKY

Hi guys, a quick update from Rocky!
Rocky has settled in well , is loving his walks and all the hugs he is getting. He is also accepting that the cats ( who were here first) are part of the family and not to be chased. To his disgust he was neutered and micro chipped last thursday but is recovering well!
All the best
Caroline

FERGY (previously Steffie)

Well, Where do we start with Fergy (formerly Steffiie )?.
First, a big thank you for everyone who helped to bring fergy to us. She arrived a timid little mite with the saddest face. The first day all she wanted to do was escape!!and was so anxious with all the changes in her short life.
She has been with us now for nearly three weeks  and the change is amazing , she adores other dogs and follows my other dog fugi around constantly , who sometimes tells her to clear off ,as does the cat! but she never takes in personal! . She greets us all with a happy face and a wagging tail and is now   more confident around people .
She has taken to her crate perfectly ,we haven't had one accident or sleepless night!. She loves her beach trips and is practicing for the christmas swim!, with  no fear at all . Fugi gets very concerned about her swims , but to fergy life is for the living!! She has made lots of new doggy friends and really enjoys the rough and tumble with the "big boys".
It has been a real joy and privilege for our family to have fergy , her character and comical ways give us so much entertainment . I have "tried" to take a few photos of her and Fugi , but as you can see she is either playing or sleeping , there is no in-between for Fergy We are working on her training at the moment which is going well enough, though she does try to use her "sad face" when  she doesn't want to do something!!.   Thank you once again to every one at DAWG From the  Coyle family

TESS

Hello!
We just wanted to let you know how Tess is getting on! She has been with us 2 weeks on friday and she is absolutely gorgeous & we love her to bits! She is no longer timid and is getting really playful and puppyish! She gets on great with my parents greyhounds especially Minnie- in photo cuddled up together! She sleeps in our room in her own bed and jumps on the bed as soon as my alarm goes off to wake us up with licks! We take her for a long walk every day & we've started training her too- she very intelligent and already knows sit, lie down and stay, and we trying to train her to be good on the lead too. She is very clean and always lets us know if she needs to go out to toilet. She loves being around other dogs so hopefully soon we will be able to get her a little friend! She is gradually getting to know our cats too, she a very sweet affectionate natured dog & we delighted she in our family!
Will Keep in touch

QUILL

Quill was another long stay of ours. Of couse being a staffie was one reason as they are so misunderstood and the other was that for reasons unknown to us, Quill suffered from terrible separation anxiety. She literally hated being alone. We all cheered when Quill recently was adopted by Patricia. Patricia was looking for a constant companion. One of our volunteers went to visit Quill last week and reports that she is very happy, sometimes sleeps on the bed with her new Mum, waits at door to get her feet wiped when she has been out, and when our volunteer Jane asked Patricia why she chose a staffie, her reply was because they are so good with people! Thank you so much Patricia for giving Quill the chance to prove herself a loyal friend.

GEORGE

Dear Margaret and Patricia,
We’ve now had the German shepherd dog, George, for over a fortnight and I thought I would tell you how he is getting on. He seems devoted to both of us and equally so to our son who is in Galway for most of the week but is around to take George for walks at the weekend.
He is a clever dog and he has now learned his name, to come when he is called, to sit and to lie down on command. He seems to be quite a non-dominant dog and now totally accepts the ‘house rules’ like not taking things from the worktops or the table (which he was inclined to do for the first day or two) or going into the bedrooms. He doesn’t jump up on people, but just wags his tail politely.
George has a lovely temperament and seems friendly to everyone – except cats!
Physically he is doing well. George is no longer so bony and his coat has begun to shine. You will be interested to hear that he loves walks. For the first few days, he really didn’t like them, but then he started to enjoy them and now his tail wags when you touch the lead.
I’m hoping to train him to play as he has no idea of what to do with a ball, or a chasing toy. I don’t think that we’ll allow him to be loose until he is hooked on a toy – I always find this is a great way of keeping a dog’s attention.
All in all, we are delighted with him. It was a sudden impulse to look at the rescue dog section as we were so upset at losing our magnificent German shepherd when he was under five years old. I thought it would be irresponsible to get another puppy since we are over seventy, so George is absolutely ideal for us. What is wonderful is that he now seems such a happy dog – if you look at him when he is in his bed, he just wags his tail.
With very best wishes, and much thanks,
Cora & Frank

JESSICA SPARKLES

Jessica has now been re homed in Dorset via Leads on rescue dogs.

From 5-8 weeks old Jessica spent 3 weeks with her foster parents Pat & Willow, as Jess became poorly.  Due to the care and effort which Pat & Willow gave Jess, a few days later she was energetic, playful and just how Puppies should be behaving. Pat & Willow were excellent foster parents. Pat updated us after each vet visit, just as he said he would, he would talk on the phone at length about the dogs, sharing his knowledge and experience.

We have had Jess for 7 weeks now, she has more than doubled in weight, doubled in size and has learnt a few basic commands.  Over the new year she developed a temperature and didn’t eat.  Due to her  history of being poorly as a young puppy we where straight to the vets for an injection and medication, 3 hours later she was back to her bubbly self. Thank goodness we have her insured.

I am unsure of how Jess came to D.A.W.G / Leads on rescue Dogs, however I am very grateful that she did. Susan, Pat and Willow have given Jess the best possible start and us a new family member who we would never want to be without.

We are looking forward to watching Jess grow, and seeing how she develops, she is starting to show some Husky markings on her tail.  She loves meeting new people and dogs, she is very sociable and has given us a lot of laughs. It is wonderful to see my children and Jess playing in the garden, park or beach. We certainly spent more time outside now and can see what we were missing, before Jess came along.

Thank you all for your excellent work!

From Anita Finlay & Jess (a.k.a Jessica Sparkles)

BUSTER update

Hi Everyone at DAWG!

Merry Christmas and hope you are all well. We have Buster now nearly 6 months! Cant believe how quickly time has flown. He has put on lots of weight and looks great. He loved having the whole family over for Christmas and himself and Harley got their own Christmas gifts of a chew and a toy and decided they prefered the other ones presents and swapped lol. He is thriving on Mobility Support, specialised food for his joints and has the biggest personality you could ever imagine and the loudest snore I have ever heard in my life! Buster and Harley are the best of buds and we just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work, long may it continue! I have attached some pics, the one of him under the Christmas Tree was a Buster classic :)

Best Wishes,
Niamh, Karl, Harley and Buster!

SOOKIE

Dear All, I thought I would send this on - this is Sookie (was Tiny) that we adopted from your website on August (was living with Margaret) - she went all the way to Coleraine and has become an adored family member. She's been getting to grips with the snow and having a
ball. My father in law who is terminally ill,has fallen completely in love with her - she is taken to visit him each day where she curls up with him on the bed for some TLC - she is providing much joy to someone who can no longer leave the home.
Regards Gillian

Lolabelle

Dear all,

We recently adopted Lola or Lolabelle as we like to call her now.(Originally Tilly). We would just like to say thank you for this wonderful girl and she really is thriving and coming out of her shell more and more with her new life with us. We absolutely adore her. She is a typical Staffy, loving, playful and always keen for lots of walks. She has brought us so much happiness and thank you to all at Dawg and expecially Alice who took her whilst she was waiting for her forever home with us. Here is a pic of her with her kind face, we love her loads xxx

BENJI

Hello to all at DAWG,
Just to let you know that Benji has really settled and become a central part of our family.  It seem as if he has always been with us.  We took him for his first walk on the beach on Sunday and he loved it.  He was very well behaved and didnt let us down in any department.   He loves the company of all the family and loves our garden.  Life was so dull without a dog in the house and thank you all so much for the great work you do and for giving us the opportunity to be able to get such a great dog.  I am enclosing a few photo to let you see how well and happy he looks and my daughter absolutely loves him to bits. Thanks to Angela for approving us and bringing Benji to the City.
Love and Happy Christmas, Maeve

JUNA (previously JESS)

Dear all at DAWG, I thought you may like to know that Juna, as she is now called, is now living with us, our two cats and our 'failed racer' Amy in West London.
She is settling in very well and slowly overcoming her fears and anxieties. She is still a little flighty but already confident enough to approach friends and family for attention and titbits. We do get glimpses of a very bright and cheeky young lady only waiting to emerge fully! Having seen your website I just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful work you are doing. Without you so many little souls would not get the chance that Juna now has.
All the very best wishes, Tanja

MAX

Hello all at DAWG and a very happy Christmas to everybody!
My name is Max (or Maxie as i'm affectionately known!), and i thought i'd send ye an update on how i'm getting on in my new home. I was adopted in July of this year and went to live in Cork city. Now i live with my new owner Orla, a very bossy mini jack russell called Heidi (i love her though and follow her lead in everything!), Snowy the very large....(or personally i think obese!) tom cat, and Millie (a little semi-ferral cat who i just LOVE to chase. Mind you if she stands her ground or paws me across the nose, i turn into a big scaredy-cat and run away! I don't bother the tom cat - he's bigger than me anyway and has a mean left hook.....i think i may even have a mark on my snout to prove it!!).
When i came first i was very skinny and unsure of the world and didn't have much energy or interest in food. Even walking wasn't exciting for me and it's many a time my owner had to carry me. Now i just LOVE my food (if Heidi doesn't finish hers quickly i'll eat hers too....my owner has been mentioning the word "diet" and looking in my direction recently...i'm not quite sure what that means but it sure doesn't sound good!). These days i adore my walkies, especially when i am allowed off my lead in the park. I am very good and come (most times!) when i am called, and only very rarely act up with other dogs. I am very good with people and even children, and never ever ever show my teeth, snap or growl at anyone. I am a happy little dog, and my tail no longer shakes like it used to when i first arrived, now it is always wagging (except when i am asleep)!
I am now fully toilet trained (apparently it was a bit of a slow process, not that i noticed!) and i am an expert at using the cat-flap (being small has some advantages!). And guess what..after tireless training by my owner & human "auntie", I can sit and give the paw! (only for treats though!). I am a very quiet boy during the day when my owner is away, and at night when other neighbourhood dogs are barking and howling i stay in my bed and cuddle myself up in my blanket next to Heidi.
I love my owner and the other humans but there's one thing i love more (don't tell her that though)....it's my squeaky toys...i have quite an assortment....i overheard my owner say that i am worse than any toddler....i love to pull them all out of their box and scatter them all over the house just for fun! I shake the guts out of the ones that don't squeak and growl like mad while i'm doing it....it seems to keep all the humans entertained! If they don't want to play with me i whack a toy against their legs until they take notice of me! They also seem to find it very funny when i run round and round in circles, growling and chasing my tail.....some day i AM going to catch it! My last hobby is chewing my nails....i can spend hours with my paw in my mouth biting my nails- i always have the perfect doggy manicure as a result! That's my update for you all, i am very happy and i love my new family nearly as much as they love me! My big brown eyes and cute face get me what i want every time!! Thank you all at DAWG for looking after me so well when i was living with ye in Doneraile, and for finding me such a great new home. Happy Christmas to all of you and to all the other doggies still waiting for that special home......believe me, it's worth the wait! Hope ye like all like the photos i made my owner take of me....... I also made her send a little Christmas donation on my behalf, for all the other doggies separately - ye should get it soon.
Lots of love, Max xx

OSCAR

Many of you will remember Oscar (formerly called Rossy Bear) who came to us in the most appalling condition having being used in fighting. This gentle boy was near death’s door when we rescued him and we were heartbroken at his suffering. A wonderful lady called Joanne from the Isle of Man adopted Oscar and took him into her home and most definitely her heart. This boy now has a life that so many rescue dogs dream of, long walks on the beach with his family of dogs, bed by the fire, lovely meals and most of all the love and care he so richly deserves. Looking at Oscar now it reinforces for us at DAWG why we do what we do every single day. (The pictures are of Oscar with two of his best friends Tom Tom the cat and Taylor. )

GEMMA

Gemma's is a very happy ending that needs to be shared. Her family came all the way over from Bensheim, Germany to give her a new home. She now shares her home with 8 other greyhounds as her new brother and sisters. She has been given such a wonderful 2nd chance with Horst and Gabi and we are eternally grateful to them for making such a huge effort to come and get her and for their patience as it took time to organise. She has such a happy life now and enjoys her beach family holiday once a year. It doesnt stop there, Gabi and Horst are now looking to bring another greyhound into their family due to the death of one of their much loved pets. Also, Gabi paints stones and sells them and donates some of the proceeds to DAWG on an ongoing basis. Thank you so much Gabi and Horst.

RUSTY

Rusty is so happy in his new home in West Cork! He loves to race along the beach at Inchydoney and Long Strand with my two other dogs (Murphy and Finn). He has even made friends with my two chickens, and checks the coop with me for fresh eggs every morning. He enjoys being groomed and his red coat is looking great. I love Irish Terriers, and to find one seven months after the loss of my previous one (Hogan, aged nearly 13) is a real blessing. We hope for many happy years together.

ZEUS

Hi Everyone at DAWG, Doneraile,
Bet you guys thought I had forgotten you! No way, I was just a little busy with my new family to get in touch.
I am now called Zeus, and I am still a busy little boy, running here and there to check things out. I have settled in really well and am spoilt rotten! I get to sit on Joy's lap and watch Tv every night, Stephen takes me for walks with Xena, who is my best friend, she is a collie cross 2 yrs old and thinks she knows everything! she even tells me when to go outside and pee and if I dont do it fast enough for her ladyship, she comes and drags me inside by my collar.... the indignity of it! and me 5yrs older than her... I have heard Stephen say she thinks she is the enforcer.... did I mention the cats? well when I first met those two I thought they were for chasing, but I soon discovered they had claws, so for self preservation I decided to stick to chasing a ball. Shadow cat, is a holy terror I stay well out of her way, But pushkin the other cat and I are now best friends we even sleep on the couch together now.
I have included some pics of my camper holiday this year, Xena and me had great fun.... I love rabbit holes... digging n' digging you can still see the sand on my fur Stephen had to come and pull me out of bunny heaven, because i kept ignoring his call.
There is one of Xena and me at the beach.... boy what a wonderful place...I love playing with the waves.
A big lick to all my friends in Doneraile,
ZEUS xxxxxxx

JACK

Jack came to us in late May 2009.
Scarely 5 weeks old, he & 5 of his siblings had been abandoned in a cardboard box at the side of the road, left to die. When DAWG found this box, only two puppies were still alive. But only just. After three weeks in the vets, though still weak & timid, Jack was ready to be homed. Jack is the most wonderful puppy. It is heart-breaking to think that someone could treat these animals with such disregard. He is healthy, strong, fit & happy now at 5 months. He keeps great company - with our older Border Collie, Tom & three kittens, who
he loves to chase... Relentlessly! Like all Border Collies, Jack is a bundle of energy, with frisbee & swimming his favourite things to do!
We would like to thank DAWG for bringing this ray of sunshine into our lives.

DEXTER

Hi all,

Dexter has been with us now for nearly two weeks and has settled in great, he is having a great time and loves investigating everything in his new home. He likes playing outside in the garden with all of his new toys.

His coat has gotten it's gloss look back and energy levels are up. He can't seem to get enough attention, and he is certainly getting it from everyone!

All the best from, Claire, Luke, Phil and Lynda.

RUSTY

Hi all at Doneraile,
We adopted Rusty about 2 months ago but it feels like his been here all his life. He is so playful and always on the go, he fits right in with us! Everyday is such a laugh with him when we go out walking people always remark on how friendly he is, although he does pick up bottles, cans and even one day when we got home we noticed he had a dummy in his mouth:)
Thank you so much for giving us Rusty, he has just brought so much happiness to our family love from rusty and the joyce family xox

Update on our gentle Annie

Wonderful news for Annie she has been adopted by a lovely lady in the UK called Pauline. She has a lovely big garden to potter around with and other greyhound friends for company, most of all she is in a home where she will know nothing other than love and care for the rest of her days. Sadly we do not know how long

Annie will live for but we hope and pray that she at least knows a few years of the wonderful life she has just landed in. Her foster Mum Pauline told us ' We are amazed at how much we love her so quickly, if that makes sense. I couldn't possibly think of life without her now, she is just wonderful and we can't thank you enough'.

Dillon

We adopted Dillon on 19th April 2009 from Cork DAWG. He is a 7 month old greyhound boy. We have always had rescue dogs, as I feel it is dreadful that so many dogs are destroyed needlessly, I would never purchase a dog from a breeder. In 1997 I adopted my first rescue greyhound called Bessie, a big beautiful blue girl who had been picked up as a stray in an appalling condition, it was due to Bessie that I began fundraising and raising awareness for greyhounds. Bessie sadly passed away in 2007 aged 13, gone, but not forgotten we will meet at rainbow bridge again one day! nds all day taking them out in the garden, and I spend all evening bringing them back in again! When we take him out for a walk he is truly amazed at the big wide world and he is surprised when he spots another 'non-greyhound' type dog. Greyhounds that work are kept in kennels, so never see other dogs at all, so they are quite perplexed when they first see other breeds of dogs. He loves his food and gets on well with Peggy and Alfie. When out for a walk now, he likes to follow Alfie and as soon as he cocks his leg for a wee, Dillon then copies him in the same place, he is so funny.

I cannot promote greyhounds highly enough, they make the most wonderful ideal pet. They get on well with other dogs generally (obviously, you would need to take care around very small dogs), they tend to walk at your own pace, they are gentle and laid back. They are extremely affectionate and loving. They easily adapt to the home environment and learn quickly, they love their home comforts. I have never had a problem with house training as they tend to be clean dogs by nature. They hardly moult at all as they are short haired. Greyhounds are fantastic with children and the elderly, I had Bessie when my daughter was only 18 months old and she was superb with her, no problems at all. They can be trained to live with cats, obviously some are better than others, but I do know many people that have greyhounds with cats. As they are sighthounds you need to take care when letting them have a run off the lead. We live in West Yorkshire, and only have a 10 min walk then we are on the moors, the dogs love to have a run and their recall is good. However, we are careful where we let them off as most will chase rabbits, cats, etc if given the chance, even if not trained to do so as it is there natural instinct.

Cork DAWG do a wonderful job in helping dogs such as Dillon with the rehabilitation, care then re-homing them. Please support them with their essential work, so many dogs need their help. If you are in a position to adopt a dog then please consider a greyhound, I promise it is not a decision you will regret, they just need a chance. But beware greyhounds are very addictive, you will not be able to stop at having just the one!!

GEM (previously BENNY)

Hello Cork DAWG!

We have adopted Benny – renamed Gem – two weeks ago, but it feels like he has always been a part of our family. Gem is exactly that – a Gem – one of a kind little treasure! We received him from a wonderful foster family – Amelia, Dylan and Holly (a gorgeous collie) - who we cannot thank enough for loving him so much, training him and doing all the hard work for us! Gem is extremely clever and is the perfect little gentleman! He knows all the house rules, walks well on a lead – and without one too, and comes back when he’s called (most of the time). We could not ask for more!

Although we are sure he misses his foster family a great deal, we are happy to say that he has settled into our house in Meath so well, and fits in perfectly! We have fallen head over heels for him as he is the most lovable little pup we have ever met! He loves to mess around – as any proper pup would – tearing apart teddies and papers and egg cartons and anything else he can find, playing fetch with hurley balls (two, cuz one is just not enough for him!), running in the fields and through every puddle during our daily walks, playing with his friends (local dogs), and even occasionally chasing sheep! On weekends we go for drives and although he still does not like getting in the car, he is getting used to it more and more. He loves the beach and walks around smelling everything around him. He is such a great companion and is not bothered by other people or dogs so we can walk him in parks and on beaches with minimal use of the lead now! He loves the weekends as do we! During the week, Gem spends time in his enclosed yard and although he has lots of space and toys around and has visitors throughout the day, he is still quite lonely as he he really misses Holly! We are presently looking for a little partner for him so he’s never alone again! Generally though, Gem is doing really well and is having a blast. We would like to thank Claudia and Amelia for everything they have done for us and Gem! You ladies are wonderful!!

Thank you! - Jimmy, Aneta, Gem, Bert and Kermit (the terrapins pets who Gem gets on well with!).

MOCHARA

Hello all at Cork DAWG,I am writing to tell you that we are over the moon with the new member of our family! Lizzie, who we have renamed Móchara, is absolutely fantastic! She is every bit as you had described and more. Such a soft, sweet soul. After we left the sanctuary, we stayed in Galway at a mates house and she was such a great guest...even if she did help herself to a cup of cold tea left on the coffee table! Never knew a dog to fancy tea before!! We let her sleep in the bed with us the first night and she loved it...she didn't even take up the whole thing! Monday, we brought her home and introduced her to Cody, our lab. He wasn't thrilled but, is coping well. Soon, I do believe, he won't know how to live without her. We have made sure to walk them frequently side by side and her calm presence is really starting to wear off on him. Fantastic! Just what that nut needs! Today's extended walk with just me was great, even with the cat that ran in front of her ;-D She is adjusting to Donegal life well and is making lots of friends already...not too many people see greyhounds around these parts I guess. So, all in all we are ecstatic with our new friend and family mate and wish to extend our sincere thanks to Vicky, and those lovely English ladies. We've ordered her a fancy new martingale and as soon as we receive it, we will happily post back the collar she came with. Thanks again and we'll be in touch with any new updates!!
All the best,
Ian, Jennie, Cody & Móchara Deane

CLOVER

Clover

Hi Vicky, Hi Jane, Hi DAWG,
As promised here are finally some news from Clover. 2 weeks have gone by very quickly. When we drove from Doneraile to Dublin she was very well behaved in the car.
She is very well behaved doesn't bark at night and is very quiet! All three of us tried the past 2 weeks to establish some kind of routine: Going for a walk in the morning, playing around during the day in the garden with her toys (without leash which is definitely her favorite:)  and have a long walk in the late afternoon. Clover still is very curious about our cats, which did not run away yet but still have to get used to the fact that there is somebody new in the house.
We just started today our puppy school classes, learning the first commands and it turns out she is very clever so the teacher says! She easily adapted to the first commands like sit, lay down and settle. She also behaves around other dogs (as we have experienced today in puppy school).
Besides that she has a little stone head as she tends to be a bit stubborn from time to time especially when we go out for a walk and she does not want to walk at all or just wants to sniff around the place. Other than that she is lots of fun and is doing just great.
She is doing very well physically, she gained 1.5 kg already and still grows a lot:)
We enjoy having her with us and are glad you decided to let her go with us!
Thanks
Katja & Martin

CHUTNEY

We had great news about Chutney who went to a wonderful new home in Jersey. Remember she was found at the bottom of a barrel? Click here for more.

Just to let you know that Mark arrived home last night with little Chutney; she is absolutely adorable and has been running around our house like a wild thing!! We kept her in our room last night in her box and she was quiet for most of the night, apart from a bit of growling with was very funny and I have no idea why, think she just wanted attention!!
She seemed very hungry but we are keeping her on dried food for now as a risk of an upset tummy is probable given the changes. She is going to our local vets tomorrow to be checked out and they will register her there and tell us if we can vary her diet a bit more. We used to give Woody scrambled eggs when he was a puppy and he loved them. I did give her some tiny pieces of chicken which she thought was amazing! This morning when I left she was dive bombing Woody in his bed and he seemed to be getting used to her so lets hope they will be great friends!! She certainly is loving all his toys. Last night she took them one by one and hid them in her basket!! Anyway thanks so much for all your efforts, we will take care of her and she will have a fantastic life in Jersey. Take Care , Mark & Lyndsay

Thank you so much Mark and Lyndsey for offering such a wonderful happy ending to Chutney!

CLIO

When Clio came to us she was an extremely malnourished, lonely and sad dog. The first home she went to did not work out as Clio and the cats did not see eye to eye!!!. So she had to come back to the sanctuary, poor Clio was very miserable in her kennel and after a few weeks just stopped eating. Our vet was of the opinion that this lovely girl was so stressed and unhappy that she just had no will to eat. We were all very anxious about Clio as she is a beautiful girl and she was at her happiest when she was out walking or with the volunteers at the sanctuary.

Fate smiled on Clio when a lovely couple Don & Anita from Sligo saw her story on the website. They had lost their own German shepherd earlier in the year and fell in love with Clio when they saw her.

So Clio went off to her new home where she is much loved and gives as much happiness to Don & Anita as they give to her. As you can see from the pictures she looks really well and happy!

He is eating very well and has only had a couple of accidents in doors. Hope the photos get to you OK which we will attach now.

NEWS ON BLUEBELL

Dear All at DAWG,
Bluebell is the sweetest girl. I have never owned a greyhound before and to find her so loyal and loving has surprised and delighted me. She is clean in the house, eats whatever I feed her and is great with our cat and cresteds. She comes to call on our walks and never really lets me out of her sight.

At night, Blue sleeps on my bed with her face close to me. My DAWG gang (see story below) are a constant pleasure, I am so lucky to have these fabulous animals in my life. I get very sad when I am grooming her and see the pressure scars on her legs;my poor baby must have spent most of her life lying on the concrete with nothing to protect her skin.

I can only be grateful that she was not destroyed;like so many of her friends; found by a sanctuary like DAWG and then came home to me. Now she only runs for her own pleasure (and the odd dog walker on the beach). I can't describe how wonderful she looks;and then she runs to me for a hug.

Thank you. Love Jan.
