JAZZ

|
Little
Jazz the westie was brought to the vet by an elderly owner
who could no longer cope and asked that Jazz be put to sleep.
Bear in mind Jazz had been up to date on vaccinations, neutered
and very well after but due to age and illnesses this owner
simply couldnt cope and sadly believed that her only option
was to put this boy to sleep. Thankfully the vet talked to
her, informed her about other ... options and called us. We
literally had a foster appeal up for 5 minutes and it was
answered by Suzanne. Within days they had fallen in love and
adopted him. She sent in a picture today and tells us Jazz
is the most amazing pet, loves the children in the home, and
even plays with the cat. We are delighted to share this happy
ending and hope that his previous owner who did care for Jazz
is happy to know he is being very well looked after

RUBY

|
Hi
my name is Ruby im the small dog with the cute white face in
the picture. I love to sleep with my sister Tessa. Even though
she is bigger then me she is so gentle with me. She is my best
friend. I was scared of her at first when i came to my foster
home, than i started to play with her and we got on so well I
know she will protect me and I will protect her. I was sad and
scared when found and was placed in foster care but my foster
mummy Georgina and daddy Martin fell in love with me so they
kept me and adopted me . I am so happy i get loads of treats
and I always sleep in the house , I am still very nervous of
people when I go for walks with my family but I will hopefully
get better with this. I am in my new home since July and I love
it here. I am so happy. I never barked before because I was
so nervous but now when the post lady comes to the door I bark
and jump up on the chair to look out the window. I am so glad
that DAWG had me as I now have a very loving home. I love been
covered with my blanket and when I know im being covered i lay
down on my back and put my 2 small paws over the blanket and
im all warm then. I am looking forward to my first Christmas
in my home with my sister Tessa and my new owners I know we
are going to get loads of treats. My owners love me so much.
Myself and Tessa always play a game to get a chase . The game
is Tessa is big so she puts her nose in the laundry basket to
look for stockings then when Tessa takes the stockings we run
and our owners chase us its great fun because Tessa would have
one and so would I .
I want to say thanks to DAWG for minding me and looking after
me till I found my forever home
I must go now get up to some mischief . |
KIZZY

|
We adopted Kizzy last Feb from the DAWG
adoptathon and what an addition to the family she has proven
to be.
She hit it off immediately with Rex our collie and the two of
them spend hours chasing each other around the garden, robbing
shoes, chewing the legs off my kitchen table and tormenting
the cat (don't worry she asks for it by meowing to wake them
up from a doggie nap, then sitting out of reach to watch the
chaos unfold.)
Walkies is her favourite time and she loves chasing Rex (usually
passing him out with ease) while he chases the ball. She greets
everyone with a wag of her tail and is well known in her usual
walking haunts. People are always stopping to rub her and ask
questions. She laps up the attention and is a real ambassador
for sight hounds as pets.
Kizzy was made to be spoilt and is a beautiful dog both in nature
and to look at.
Her favourite pastime after running and playing is sleeping,
usually on her fleece blanket on the couch or under the duvet
on the bed if she can get away with it.
Kizzy and her lurcher friends Willow and Flynn, also adopted
from DAWG have been helping DAWG out recently in Douglas and
Kinsale with their flag days as a thank you for the great care
they took of her before she found her new home.
Also we would like to thank Angela who fostered Kizzy and took
such good care of her before we adopted her. She puts so much
time, effort and heart into Kizzy and all her foster dogs.
Thank you DAWG and Angela
Keep up the good work
Alan, Mary, Rex and Kizzy x

TORY

|
He
has settled in well. Practically fully house trained now.
He is brilliant by night. Not a peep out of him once he
goes to bed. He is a right character, full of personality,
really clever and boy does he know he has landed on his
feet. He loves his comforts, especially his bed and will
ask to go to bed at night if he's had a full day. He has
my mum wrapped around his paw and loves it when she brushes
him and they chat to each other for half an hour everyday.
Of course what he really loves is his treat after the brushing.
He has put on good weight now and is a solid little dog.
He LOVES his teddy and spends hours playing with him. He
has all the cats warned off our back garden. He would spend
ages watching at the window for them and some days he looks
disappointed because they are not coming in anymore. He
loved the chase. Everyday my parents have a new story about
him and getting him was the best thing for them too. When
I visit he goes berserk when he sees me and its a lovely
feeling to have him that happy to see me.
All in all, he is seriously
loved here and is showing the signs of it. We just want
to thank DAWG because he is just what my parents needed.
A dog that isn't too much trouble but has some spunk and
personality which he has in abundance. I'm attaching a
few pictures of him taken at the end of September.
Thanks again, Amanda.

BOBBI

|
Hi
my name is Bobbi. I have recently graduated from puppy training
school, let me tell you it wasn't easy. Who knew toilet rolls
weren't there for unrolling, cupboards weren't for peeing
on or letters weren't for eating?
I was adopted at the DAWG adoption day on February 14th and
my Mam Michelle said I was a wolf in sheep clothing! Fluffing
and white on the outside, with a looper personality hidden
underneath. I love playing with my sister Daisy who is also
a rescue dog and my sister Millie who is an old foggie. We
love to see who can run up and down the stairs the fastest,
life is just so much fun!
I'm told something called Christmas is coming soon, and somebody
named Santa is going to call. If I'm good I'll get a present,
but if I'm bold I'll probably still get one cos I'm cute.
Life just gets better and better! I've got to go now and cause
more mayhem!
But I just wanted to thank everyone at DAWG who minded me
before I got my forever home.

LUCKY

|
Dear
Dog Action Welfare Group,
My
name is Katrina and although I haven`t met any one of you
wonderful people, I
had the pleasure to speak with Avril a few weeks ago about
adopting Lucky.This
is just a Thank You note for giving me the chance to provide
Lucky with
a
place to call home. He is a wonderful dog and I am very
glad to have him
in my life now. Please find attached a few photos of him
in his new bed withhis
favorite toys and at his favorite doggy park.
Thank
You from the bottom of my heart, for your patience, care,
dedication and above
all, for the love that you give to all the dogs that you
help.

JET

|
Jet
and another dog were found by a passer-by at the side of the
road. They had been hit by a car. Jet had a dislocated shoulder
and very sadly his friend was dead.We fostered Jet on New
Year’s Day. His leg had been strapped back to prevent him
putting weight on the shoulder. Unfortunately, he became unwell
a few days later so we took him to the vet. The bandage was
removed but it had been too tight and a nasty infection had
set into his foot. He came home with pain killers and strong
antibiotics but the next day the flesh on his leg turned blue
and started to fall off. I had often wondered what gangrene
smelled like, now I knew. It completely filled the house.Over
the next few weeks the flesh was eaten away to the bones and
a few of the foot bones died as they lost their blood supply.
Poor jet was in a lot of pain but was so brave. He was always
in good spirits, wanting to play, tail always wagging for
a game. After another trip to the vets and more tests, the
results were not good and we came to a mutual decision to
have the leg removed. We were very sad about this as we had
tried so hard and we wanted him to be able to run around on
all 4 legs. But now, we all felt that Jet had suffered long
enough and he needed to get on with his life, pain free. He
came home heavily bandaged and on three legs and we were told
to keep him still for 3 weeks. Not easy! It was, however,
good to know that after the long battle, the end of the pain
and the pills was in sight. Now,
months later, he is very much part of the family. We decided
(right from the start) that he was staying with us. He spends
his days playing with our 4 bitches Indi, Ginny, Poppy and
Sausage and gets on well with all the cats. He chases toys
just as fast as the others, and can jump and climb. He loves
long walks and can swim really well. He can even lift one
leg and balance on just two!
Jet
is a very special boy. He went through a lot and amazed us
constantly with how well he coped with it all. We love him
very much. Thank you DAWG for bringing him to us.

CHARLIE
|
Charlie
is my best mate. After he moved in there were times when I
freaked
out
thinking of what it was I had actually undertaken. God, the
responsibility !
I can't even be trusted to brush me teeth sometimes. But with
a little training he
has turned out brilliantly. He has a lovely temperment and
is known throughout
the
town.
He
comes everywhere with me. I drive a ferry in the Summer and
the
passengers
are consistently besotted by him. When I'm not working I'm
surfing
and
Charlie comes too. I love him. We go everywhere together,
even to the pub.
He's as good as gold, he sits, stays, fetches and never crosses
a road without me.
When I go into a shop he lies down at the door and waits patiently
for me.
Most
of all he is always glad to see me and me him. I can't imagine
life without him. |
KIRK

|
We
thought we'd drop you a note to let you know that we adopted
Kirk from GRWE
after
sadly losing Billy, one of our beloved Lurchers, to osteosarcoma.
GRWE
invited us to meet a young Lurcher called Kirk, who you
originally rescued, with
Woody our
remaining Lurcher and Daisy our old English Bull Terrier.
They all hit it
off and the rest is history!! We've re-named Stanley and
he's a wonderful boy in every way.
He's
settled in so quickly. He's so loving and gentle - he would
cuddle 24/7 - and has a
smashing
personality. From day one, he's been clean, travelled well
and his recall is
amazing.
Stan's not overly keen on cats but he loves to play with
other dogs both
large and small. Stan's just the tonic we all needed after
losing Bill. We can't
emphasise
enough what lovely family pets Greyhounds and Lurchers make
- we
were
hooked after adopting Bill, our first Lurcher!! It's so
sad that people overlook
them
as they really are fantastic dogs. Thank you for rescuing
him - he wouldn't be
with us now if you hadn't have helped him.
Kind
regards

BERTIE

|
Hi
all at DAWG,just giving u an update on Bertie the Bassett
we adopted from u back in February.
He settled in very fast with our other 2 dogs Toby the bassett
and Leila the shih tzu. Himself and Leila are best buds and
are partners in crime causing destruction all over
the house whenever they get a chance. Toby is the boss and
puts Bert back in his placewhen he has 2 :-) Bertie is a very
nervous dog around new people and absolutly hates crowds, loud
noises, playing ball and hurleys! This makes us believe that
he wasn't treated very well in the past. He is fine around
us though and has learned 2 trust our friends and
family
who call 2 the house regularly. Unfortunaely Bertie recently
started dragging his front
paw
and falling over which was all 2 familiar 2 us as these were
the symptoms our other
bassett Toby showed when he was diagnosed with wobbelers syndrome
and had 2 have
a
big surgery on his spinal cord last year. Fortunately 4 us
and Bertie we have him insured
and
we were referred 2 Shane Guerin in Gillabbey Veterinary hospital
where we payed a visit 2 last week. Bertie must go 4 an MRI
scan and spinal xrays next week and then surgery at a later
date. I have every faith in Shane and his staff that Bertie
will be a new dog in no time. I will
keep
u updated on his progress and post some pics up soon. Thank
u 2 Vicky, Jane and
all
the great staff at DAWG for giving us Bertie :-) Keep up the
great work ye do. Lots of love Brid,Brian, Toby, Leila and
of course Bertie xxxxx
Update -
Sadly Bertie recently passed away. RIP Bertie

CHESTER

|
I
just want to say a big thank you for rescuing and looking
after my dog (see pics) who was
transported
from your centre to the Dogs Trust in Canterbury, Kent where
I rehomed him
from
in September 2010. I attach some pictures for you to see
how he is enjoying his new home, where he has 2 long walks
a day in the heart of the countryside in Kent. He loves chasing
rabbits and has so much energy but loves a proper cuddle at
bed time.
He
sleeps on my bed with me and I don't know what I would do
without him as my mum passed away last year and I was very
sad and lonely and he has helped me through a lot.

BENNY

|
I
got Benny from my great friend Avril over a year ago. Having
been unemployed for a while
I was living at home with my mother and she instantly fell
in love with Benny. He positioned
his
head over her feet every evening in front of the fire looking
for a rub. He was hard work
for
a while as he was not used to other dogs and was quite vicious
at times. I took him for
walks out the beach in Youghal every day and gradually over
time he got better and was more sociable. However last November
my mother fell ill and her consultant said she could not have
a
dog
in the house so unfortunately Benny had to go. I explained
the situation to Avril and she immediately found him a home
with an older man who had just lost his own dog. I really
missed Benny when he left but I had no choice. After a month
Benny’s new owner decided he was too young a
dog for him to handle so I was asked to take him back for
a few days until a new foster home
could
be found. My mother was in hospital at this stage so I was
delighted to have Benny back for a while.few days later we
were informed that my mother was terminal and could not come
home. From this personal tragedy I got my Benny back and he
was with me when my mother eventually passed
away in January and is still with me now. Benny has helped
me through the loss and is now my constant companion. His
month away from me had a huge impact on him and he was very
much changed and quieter when I got him back. He still has
his moments but generally he is very well behaved and likes
nothing better than curling up between my legs on the couch
at night watching tv. His favourite place is at the window
on the landing like the Lion King surveiling his Kingdom and
barking at anything that passes. When I say he is a character
you dog owners will know exactly
what
I mean and you couldn’t possibly say no to those eyes when
they look straight at you. Thank you DAWG and thank you Avril. |

KANE |
Message from Kane's owner Sheila:
Hello, I live in London and last November adopted a young
border collie called Kane. He had an untreated broken leg
and was very underweight. I'm attaching a photo of him in
the snow last winter. He's now about 18 months old, a delightful
dog with a wonderful nature, and his broken leg is now fully
healed. I'd like to donate £50 to say thank you for looking
after him
Best
wishes
Sheila
Thanks Sheila! Great
to see Kane looking so well and happy in his forever home
- many thanks for your generous donation! |

LOUIS

|
We
are very happy to get Louis' happy ending picture. Here he
is
standing tall, proud and glowing with health. He is living
the life now in Killaloo, Co Clare. He has settled well and
his health has improved vastly and his new family adore him.
When we came across Louis he was in a dank cold shed with
another dog. It was during the freezing cold weather and they
had been abandoned for 2 weeks with no one to look after them.
Thankfully a neighbour found out they were there and rang
us. When the shed door was opened both dogs were up to their
knees in freezing cold water. It was a pitiful sight.
And it makes everything so worthwhile when we get a photo
like this.

MAX

|
Max
joined our family in April 2011. Honestly, it took a few weeks
for
us to get used to Max. He is a young dog, does not come back
when called, will chew anything left hanging around, has a
tendency to chase cattle when we are out for our walks!!!
But since that period Max has developed a strong bond with
our family. He comes everywhere with us. On daily walks, family
weekends away and
recently a day trip to the beach. Max has a new friend brandy
that he loves to chase and play with. Max is a great addition
to our family and we would like to commend the wonderful care
given to Max by his
foster parent Emma.

MAC
|
Mac
waited over a year for his forever home. He stayed with Suzy
and her husband for most of that time and they all waited
patiently. We are so happy for Mac whose wait was very worth
it and he is very happy now with Pat, Don and Ruby. Read what
they have to say: Ruby is the fluffy white Bichon and Mac
is our newly acquired gorgeous black Lurcher. We got him from
DAWG just over 4 months ago. He was nursed back to rude health
by Suzy for eight months before we got him. She took fantastic
care of him and renewed his trust in people. We saw him on
the website and knew straight away he was the one for us!
Ruby is the boss when we’re all indoors, but on our
adventures outside Mac is most definitely the top dog. He’s
a really gentle soul but he’s not a total softie!
By
now the two of them are the best of pals, unless Ruby tries
to steal one of Mac’s squeaky balls and then all hell breaks
loose! They’re always planning something, so we really have
to watch these two when we’re cooking.
Their
favourite pastimes are sleeping, running, going on holidays
to Offaly in the car and troubling the chickens that live
in a secure run in our back garden.
Thanks
to DAWG for giving us the opportunity to adopt Mac, to Suzy
for the amazing work she did and to Georgie the Dog Listener
who was a great source of advice and support in the early
days during the settling in period.

TIBBS

|
Tibbs is
living the life in his new home in Ballincollig, Cork. He
is an adored member of the family and has a box full
of cuddly and squeaky toys. He is happiest when curled up
on
your lap
or having a game with his toys. He sleeps in Thani's bedroom
by night and has the choice of his own cosy bed or Thani's
but usually hops up on Thani's for cuddles (pictured right)
during the night. Thank you to Susan, Thani, and family
for adopting Tibbs and giving him a very happy home. |
FREDDIE

|
Hi
Guys!
Just
updating you with another of Lady's puppies. We adopted this
little guy last November, and named him Freddie! He's 8 months
old now, an absolute joy! He's very friendly and energetic
on walks and loves running, but at the same time he adores
his naps and a good sleep! He has a play with
everyone
he meets and is extremely good natured.
He has caused us no trouble, only happiness and we wish to
thank you so
much
for all of your help, especially Edel and Angela! We are currently
deciding
on a buddy for Freddie and you may see us back soon adopting
another
dog from you!
Much Love and Gratitude,
Aidan&Brenda.

TIA

|
Hello,
Just thought that you might be interested to see a couple
of photos of Tia, one of the farm pups your group rescued
in February last year. We adopted her from Wiccaweys border
collie rescue in Wellingborough when she was nearly six months
old and kept the name you'd given her. She's 18 months old
now and thanks to Cork DAWG and Wiccaweys we have a very special
and wonderful dog. Thank you for rescuing her and giving her
a chance to find a loving home. We love her to bits.

BART

|
Hi
all at DAWG, here is a quick update of how Bart is doing
since we adopted him. He is so
happy
and full of life, he never stops running around and has
the neighbours dog worn out from
playing.
He loves to chew on anything especially my shoes! He has
to be the centre of attention
at all time. He has settled in very well and is one of the
family already! His favourite thing to
do is 'walkies' and hes not a bit shy, he likes to greet
everyone! He's great fun and always cheers everyone up so
much so even our next door neighbour has a 2 yr old baby and
anytime she is upset the minute she sees Bart the tears
disappear!!! We want to thank everyone at DAWG for giving
Bart a second chance, he is loving life.
Thank
you |
SCOOBY

|
Here
is an update on Scooby, one of Lady’s puppies that we got
from you last November. He is almost 8 months old now and
is a darling family pet. He is very affectionate with everyone
he meets and gets so excited when we return that he not only
wags his tail but his whole body. Even if we just go upstairs
for 5 minutes he greets us when we come back down as if we
have been away for ages. He is a lively dog, loves his walks
and catching a ball and is always keen to play. He loves playing
with all the soft toys in the house (and has demolished quite
a few) as well as having a great fondness for socks! We are
delighted with our family pet and thanks to all at D.A.W.G
for all the good work you do.
Best
wishes from Emily, Andrew, Susan and Gordon.
PS
we were delighted to read the update on his mum, Lady and
to see how well she is doing. |
RUBY

Ruby our
little cairn x girl has settled so well. She gets on with
all our pets & loves nothing more than lounging in the
sun. Thanks again for our little bundle of fun.

for giving this boy his happy forever home. |
ROSIE
& JIM

|
Dear
all at D.A.W.G
We
thought it was about time that we let you know how Rosie and
Jim (previously named Inky) are doing!
We
adopted Rosie in June last year, and adopted Jim around August
for company!
They
both settled in well, although Jim still loves chasing our
cat, and could do with calming down a small bit, but I’d say
it’s in his nature, as he is totally hyper!
Rosie
is still very nervous of noises and men in general!
They
love their runs on the beach!
We
feel that they have been with us forever!
They
are totally spoilt rotten!
And
we love them to bits!
We
entered a display in the Paddy's day parade in Carrigaline
and said we would send in a picture of them in the float!
Thank
you again D.A.W.G for all the hard work you do!!!! |
LADY

|
Hi
all at DAWG, just want to give you an update on Lady who we
adopted 7 weeks ago. Lady has settled in so well with us &
it feels like we've had her forever, can't imagine her not
being here. She is the gentlest soul and we feel so lucky
to have found her. Lady is great on her lead & loves her
walks. She just adores attention, a nice cuddle & massage.
We were surprised our dog Murph took
to her so quick (we've never had another dog in our house),
we think he's in love! They love to curl up together to sleep
& playtime is very noisy & energetic, Murph likes
nothing better than relaxing in the evening & cleaning
Lady's ears which she just loves.
Our
3 boys adore Lady & because of her they have decided they
would like 'just one more' dog but 3 boys & 2 dogs is
enough, for now. Friends who have called have commented on
how friendly she is, she's just excited to see everyone.
The only strange thing we've found
is a few times whilst walking she has 'squealed' after other
dogs, i've never heard a noise like it. Its not all dogs
she does this after just a random few. The noise she makes
is so loud & people stop to stare, goodness knows what
they think we are doing to her! But she's just really excited,
cats cause her to make the same noise.
All in all Lady is definitely the girl for us. Thanks
to all the work you do at DAWG and a special thanks to Lady's
foster Edel, who knew Lady well enough & was able to tell
us so much about her we knew travelling the 400 kilometres to
get her would be worth it.
Love, Stephen, Heather, Dylan, Nathan & Ethan Thompson

JAZZ

|
Hi
all this is Jazz here I just thought you would like to see how
Im doing now that Im all better and in my new home with my new
brother oz. I'am such a lucky dog that Maurice found me that
day back in oct as the vet said I would not have survived another
night out in the horrific weather conditions, I was so frightened.
I went to a foster home for a while where I had two foster brothers
who taught me a lot about living with humans, Bailey (the yellow
lab) showed me how to play and how to walk on a lead and not
be frightened.I moved into my new home just before Christmas
with my brother Oz our mum and dad (Maurice and Shirley) who
love us very much and take us for walks every day and a lot
of people say how handsome I am when we're on our walks. We
go walking on the beach and meet other dogs and have a lot of
fun, then we go back home where we have lovely food and a sofa
all to ourselves where we can snooze the day away. Shirley is
a great mum and takes me to the vet just to make sure Im doing
ok. Im eight months old now and I feel great, it feels like
Im in doggy heaven here.
So I would just like to thank you all at DAWG for helping me
and giving me my forever home where I am truly loved. XXX

DEXTER

|
We
adopted Dexter on 24 December and we now feel that he has
been part of this family forever. He settled down very quickly
and was brilliant with all the comings and goings of my older
children and family over the Christmas period. His home is
now in Rugby, England with my husband, our 11 year old daughter
Beth and myself + four moggies, two rabbits and chickens.
At the moment we are into week four of obedience classes!!!
He's enjoying at least three 40+ minute walks a day so the
whole family is getting fitter and the weekends we go off
exploring new areas of the UK.
Anyway, attached is a couple of pictures
of him taken a couple of weeks ago - he's still on his training
lead until he really, really does learn to 'come' when called.

FRANK

|
Frank
is a very affectionate boy and loves body contact., when he
is lying down he likes some part of him to be in contact with
us. He suffers separation anxiety, if we are in another part
of the house and he is not with us he whines. He adore the fire
and takes off at a rate of knots when he sees the coal bucket,
he also likes crunching singles (we've only had one other dog
who did that a labrador as well). He has an incredible sweet
tooth and has taken to guard dogging an empty biscuit tin in
the living room, hands off it's his. Recently he has taken to
helping me in the kitchen when I am cooking as a commi chef,
in other words, if he smells something he like he starts drooling
and puts on that really sad expression, 'how can you not feed
me'. Maggie and himself get on really well. She is an 11 year
old Black and Tan German Shephard from the rescue centre in
Port Laoise. Surprisingly they have very similiar temperaments
and both have the attitude live and let live., except with cats.
Our neighbour has a really bold black cat. He walks down the
cul-de-sac stops at the gate waits until the dogs see him, when
they see him, they get all excited barking and howling and once
the cat gets this reaction from them, he walks off as cool as
a breeze.
He loves going for walks but will need alot of training on a
lead as he is a terrible for pulling. I tried the halti with
him, but he hated it. Pat, my husband, will need to do this
training with Frank, as Frank is way too strong for me. In summary
he is charming, affectionate, into everything, loves the car,
runs everywhere and we are extremly lucky to have him with us.

JAKE

|
Jake
is exactly what we needed, the perfect addition to our family.
He gets on brilliantly without little fluffy schipperke Patti,
and our 2 year old daughter Soraya adores him (and him her).
We
have had him for a few months now and I’ve delayed sending
an e-mail until he had his feet under the table as we say.
Well he's still doing well, he’s a joy to have around, the
perfect jogging companion and best friends with Soraya. He's
keen with squirrels still but not overly so, he’s easy to
call back and very loyal. Some pics attached so you can see
how he's doing, Again thank you all so much, without your
hard work and dedication to this loving breed well.......!

RUBY

|
Hi,
Just to finally let you know how Ruby is doing. We adopted
Ruby last
summer and we are really delighted with her. She is so loveable
and
friendly to everyone even our cat Lily. They love to curl
up together as
you can see from the photo and they also love to chase each
other around
the place and play together. Ruby loves her walks and gets
very excited
when she sees her lead or sees us getting ready to take her
out and when
she comes home she loves to sit on a lap and get a cuddle.
We cannot say
enough good things about her. Thanks again for letting us
adopt her.

TESS

|
Tess came to live with us last
November as a foster dog along with her brother Pete (now
Seamus). She was one of a litter of tiny lurchers rescued from
appalling conditions by DAWG. They were very thin, covered
in mange and not well at all. For the first few weeks all
they did was eat and sleep, wrapped around each other, hugging.
Over the past few months we watched these puppies thrive
and come alive and soon they were a joy to live with and to
watch as they rediscovered life and how they were supposed
to live - not just clinging onto life, but enjoying living
it!
On
Christmas Eve last little Seamus went to his forever home
in Galway and we knew we could not let Tess go. We decided
to adopt her and she has joined our family seamlessly. Our
two little boys and two little girls adore her and she snuggles
with them on the couch and potters around the garden with
them. She does not know her own speed and staggers us every
day with how fast she can go and she loves to run and run
- always coming back when called. She sleeps on the couch
or on the bed, when allowed. Recently she befriended our latest
foster pup and looked after him like a big sister. She gets
so much attention when she is out as she is so friendly and
sweet and very pretty to look at. We do not understand why
more people don't give lurchers and greyhounds a home - I
have many years of experience of dogs and they are the No.1
family friendly dogs. So we look forward to a life with our
sweet new girl who snoozes as much as she runs. Thanks to
DAWG for finding her for us and for bringing her home. Katie,
Sean, Molly, Johnny, Dan and Nancy Hogan.

FUDGE &
BAXTER

Hi
! just giving you an update on Fudge and Baxter ! They are
getting on great together they love playing and running up
and down the three floors of our house! Both of them are learning
simple tricks like giving the paw etc! They are very smart!
Baxter is sharing Fudge's love for the couch and when ever
the heater is on he is the first to jump in front and go to
sleep! If Baxter has been bold and im telling him off Fudge
gets very protective and will sit in front of Baxter until
I'ive given in and cuddle them! Its very hard to be cross
with such beautiful dogs anyway! Thanks so much for giving
me two wonderful puppies couldnt be happier with them!! |
MAFI

We
are delighted to share Ross's happy ending as he truly
waited so long to find his wonderful forever home.
Hi
All,
Margaret wanted these pics of Ross
(aka Mafi) for your happy endings section. As you can see
he's king of the couch and is getting on fine. Keeping us
on our toes. If you see him running by we'll be the people
chasing him like idiots.
Thanks for your help. It's nice to know we could help
a dog who had been with you for so long. Staffies might not have
a great rep, but we couldn't have found a sweeter boy. With
a bit of work we know we're goig to have a pure pet on our
hands.
Many thanks,
Alan, Ger and Mafi.

Hi
Everyone,
I
just thought I would drop you a line to let you know how I'm
getting on at my new forever home. After a very long journey
which I slept all the way through I met my brother Teddy (he
is also on this page) for the first time and it was fantastic
as he welcomed me with open paws and we played for ages. Mum
and Dad are brilliant they even let me sleep on the bed and
I've also got a lovely log burner I like to curl up in front
of. I'm getting on really well with the parrot and the two cats
like to play with me to. It's so exciting here every day is
different and full of new things to do, I have had lots of visitors
and got some really great new toys for Christmas. I have a massive
garden that Teddy and me race around in it's great fun. I'd
better go now as I have to go and play some more with Teddy.
I would like to thank all the people who have helped me get
to my new home and Teddy says thanks for sending him a new brother
to play with and go on walks with. I have sent you a couple
of pictures just so you can see how truly relaxing it is here.
I will write again soon bye for now

TYCO

|
Hi,
I
thought you might like an update on Tyco who was the three
legged male lurcher that you helped when he was in your care
and eventually he was sent over to England to Wood Green Animal
Shelter where we adopted him.
We
came across Tyco in July 2010 and fell in love with him
straight away. After two visits, two walks and lots of
questions my partner Neil and I decided he was the one for
us so we took him home on the 3rd July. After a very long
unsettled night we began bonding and now it's hard to imagine
life without him. He's so much more confident and leaps
up and down our stairs with no care in the world. He's
made lots of doggy friends and enjoys runs off lead round
our local park. Training is proving to be a bit of a challenge
as he can be quite stubborn but when he's focussed he's
a pleasure to train. He's learnt to sit, stay, down and
roll over. He's discovered the art of chasing ducks and
squirrels in the local park too but hasn't managed to catch
any yet. He also likes to run down the river bank and have
a paddle in the stream in the park as well (much to my horror
the first time we let him off as I thought he was going
to get stuck and not get back up the bank but he loves it).
He is no longer a matt black with brown fluffy patches but
has the most gorgeous black shiny coat which everyone comments
on. He's quite a celebrity round our way as he's well known
to the locals and around the park and when he's in the garden
he pops his head over the fence to say hello to anyone going
passed (everyone stops to pat him on the head) He's seldom
left on his own and has a very action packed social life
and is really happy.
Thank
you so much for helping him out when you found him. I know
he broke his leg somehow but he copes really well without
it.
Best
wishes

BYRON

|
Just
thought you might to like to know that just over a year ago
we adopted Brian (now called Byron) from Wiccaweys, and having
looked out his vaccination certificate I see that he came
to Wiccaweys via your rescue.
I
attach a photo of Byron (He is on the right) and thank you
from the bottom of my heart for rescuing him. He is an
absolute joy and totally devoted to us, and his old collie
friend, Monty (who also came from Wiccs a few months earlier).
We believe he may have suffered a jaw injury at some time
as he does struggle to open his mouth very far, and he cannot
bark, though he has a wonderful howl when he thinks I have
gone out without telling him I am going! Monty, bless him
is probably about 15 now and is totally deaf and nearly
blind but when we are out on our walks Byron always waits
for Monty to catch up.
Best wishes,
Kate

Dear
D.A.W.G,
Tessie
here (with the white face in the photos)! Sinead and Garry
said I should write to say thanks for everything. Sin says
when I first came home to Killeagh I missed my foster-mammy
a lot and was nervous of strangers and even my new sister
Honey for a while. I’m brilliant now though! I love playing
in the snow and rolling around in my coat. Honey and I run
up and down the beach chasing seagulls almost every day..but
I haven’t caught one yet (someday I will) My favourite place
to be is curled up right beside the stove on my fluffy bed
or cuddled close with Honey and my foster-sister Angie. And,
shhh, don’t tell Mam and Dad but I love sneaking right under
the covers of the bed when they’re asleep and snuggling into
them; they’re so warm and smell good. Garry says I’m amazingly
loyal, the only time I’m not sitting beside (or on top of)
someone is when I’m trying to steal a sneaky piece of food,
but hey who doesn’t want to eat bread fresh from the oven!
We play lots of games like fetch, and hide and seek and I
love when Sinead blows the whistle, she always has a treat
waiting when I come over. I’ve made loads of new friends in
the woods and on the beach, my favourite is the Husky, he
always wants to play. And I’ve met loads of nice people who
pet me and say nice things about how pretty my eyelashes are
and how shiney my coat is when we’re out helping collect money
for DAWG.
D.A.W.G.
thank you all so very very much for saving me from that place,
for loving me, being patient, gentle and kind, and for finding
my family for me. I love them and they love me. We’ve got
big plans for the next 12 months, Mammy says Santy is bringing
treats and new beds and then when the sugarsnap peas are just
ready for me to eat sitting under the bushes we’re going on
Honeymoon to Galway, to a 4 star hotel! I don’t see why Honey
gets a moon and I don’t .
Anyway
I think I smell carrot muffins, got to run and give Mammy
sad eyes ;)
Love
and licks,
Tessie

DAISY

An
update from Daisy, one of Lady's gorgeous puppies who
went to live with Crisie and Shane,
The first 2 nights i felt awful, she cried for a lot of it,
although i reckon it was because she wasnt getting the heat
from the hot water bottle because it was under the her mattress.
Now she just wakes and barks a bit at 7am which is brillian.
She is teething at the moment so we've given her loads of
toys to keep her occupied.... so far shes stayed away from
the furniture!
i left her on her own today for the first time during the
day for an hour with the radio on and she was sleeping by
the time i got back. She is getting bigger every day and is
great company. She has had her first vaccination and the vet
gave her the thumbs up. Will keep you posted. Thanks, Crisie
and Shane.

REGAN

Thought
you might like an update from Regan, tri colour collie cross
taken in by you early this year and sent to England to be
rehomed by the Dogs' Trust. We adopted him in March and
he has been an absolute joy.
He
seems to love life here on the east coast with beaches, woods
and marshes to explore. He enjoys sharing our caravan holidays.
I attach a photo of Regan and my husband John during our walking
holiday in the Peak District this summer. A dog no one wanted
and a man who had open heart surgery, being good for each
other.

Hello!
I am sending you pictures
of Joey who now resides in in Wexford. He is getting on brilliantly!
He and Jessie (our Retriever girl) are already great friends!
Joey adores water and swims in the river at the back of our
garden every day! He is the sweetest boy ever!
He got his vaccinations
and some medicines for his ear, which is getting a lot better,
with Jessies help - she licks it for him for hours!!
Thank you so much for this
opportunity, we are all in love with Joey! ;-)

TOMMY
|
Finally after 2 years my Mum has actually loaded all my pictures
on to her laptop and here are just a few to show how totally
happy I am. I have lots of friends and I live with two cats
and a parrott (noisy thing!!). I love to go on really long
walks with my Dad and my favourite thing is to carry logs
home for our logburner. After a long day I snuggle up in bed
with my Mum and recharge my batteries to do it all again the
next day.
I really would like a little friend to come and live with
me so that we can play all day, so I have asked Mum &
Dad to contact you and see if there is anyone who would like
to come and live with me and our little family. So watch this
space and maybe there will be more pictures soon.
Thanks to everyone who helped rescue me and found me my forever
home xxxxxx

Hi
all at DAWG,
Adopted Ralphie from you in August when DAWG were collecting
outside my shop in Market Green Midleton. I fell in love with
him and he looked so sad I couldn’t leave him so had to take
him. We had 2 st Bernards already, a 2 year old female St Bernard
called Kerri and a 9 month old male St Bernard calling Sammi.
He has definetly found his place as the boss of the house. He
is an absolute dote and the best watchdog ever. He is totally
spoilt rotten and loves nothing more than lying on the couch
by the fire or running after the rabbits in our garden. Thanks,Fionnuala.

CASSIE
and DIEGO

|
Hi
all,
Just
wanted to send you an up to date picture of Cassie and Diego.
Cassie is two and bit now and Diego is 15 months old! Cassie
has gotten fat (weight watchers we think!) and Diego has just
grown..and grown! Although the leaner of the two. They are
the best of buds and share everything together. They make
quite the cunning team..Diego can now open the front door
himself and Cassie has taken ownership of the biggest chair
in the living room!
We
would be lost without them.

BUZZ

|
Buzz recently after a long wait went to the home worth waiting
for and is very happy with Ide and Cian where he is adored.
Hi
all,
Gach rud go hiontach le Buzz pé scéal é. Cian chomh chomh
sásta leis, just totally loves him. Tagann sé sa ghluaisteán
linn gach maidin agus nuair a chríochnaíonn Cian ar scoil
bím féin agus Buzz ag feitheamh air ag an ngeata...you should
see the smile on his face when he sees him, so cute. Buzz
go hiontach leis na leanaí ar fad ag an scoil, they're mad
about him and he gets lots of attention, agus tá sé go hiontach
leis na leanaí mór-thimpeall an estate freisin. Every1 comments
on how friendly and easy-going out he is, it's mad. Ní raibh
fadhb ar bith againn fós le aon madra eile. Tagann Buzz ag
rith liom sa pháirc, na Lee Fields de ghnáth, scaoilim ón
lead é and he just loves it. Bíonn sé ag súgradh leis na madraí
go léir, idir bheag agus mhór. Ní bhíonn aon eagla air agus
ní raibh sé crosta ná ag amhastraigh fós. Tá sé do-chreidte
cé chomh tapaidh is atá sé agus é ag rith. Fuair Cian liathróid
nua dó um thráthnóna agus chuamar go dtí an páirc...IMPOSSIBLE
to get the ball off him once he gets going, he should be on
a football team. He really is just so much fun, and we're
mad about him, and he's just such a crazy unusual character.
Fágfaidh mé slán leat go fóill but will be in touch again.
Míle buíochas as ucht gach rud :)

Good
news for one of our Greys Nancy, who travelled to Germany
recently
Hi
Vicky
my
name is Dany and I'm Nancys foster mum :)
Nancy arrived last saturday afternoon and now she lives with
me, my Irish Wolfhound Noah and my Greyhound Nell, she is
an ex racer too.
Nancy is such a cute girl, she likes to be cuddled all the
day and I think she is really happy to be with us now. She
get's food (fresh tripe and minced beef) in the morning and
in the evening, we are going for walks 3-4 times a day and
she loves the sofa, all the soft beds and especially her dog
treats.

| MAX

|
Dear
Team at DAWG
As
you know the children and I collected Travis (now known as
Max) from Doneraile last Saturday afternoon. I have to tell
you that I have never come across a dog with such a loving
and trusting temperament. He has settled down with our other
two dogs and after only 48 hours comes to his name, sleeps
in his new bed in the kitchen with the others, is house-trained,
walks across the headland here without the lead and stays
by my side. He never growls or shows any aggression whatsoever
even when Milly the Labrador rumbles at him if he strays onto
‘her’ territory. He’s such a happy and pretty little dog.
I was expecting the settling in process to take a few weeks
and am truly amazed that he behaves as if he has been with
us all his short life and simply ‘fits in’ with our daily
routine. He is the sweetest dog. Today is the day to make
an appointment for his neutering. I can’t thank you enough
for allowing Travis to come home with us, he is already an
adored member of the family.

| BAILEY

|
Dear
D.A.W.G,
I thought it was about time that we updated you on Bailey
(formerly Paddy) 3 year old Black Labrador cross. We have
had Bailey for about 7 weeks now, he has a great temperament,
well trained on and off the lead. We have had him micro-chipped
and tagged for security, he does have a tendency to roam especially
with our other DAWG dog Daisy (small Jack Russell cross).
They were sited by our neighbour heading into Newmarket about
a mile and a half from home. We travelled down and they were
so pleased to see us and get in the car. A few days later
they got out again and we received a phone call from a gentleman
saying he stopped his car to get some paperwork off the back
seat and the two dogs jumped in, would we like him to deliver
them back home. We went and picked them up, the gentleman
was laughing about the whole episode.
The pair get on so well together, it was the best decision
we made to let Bailey choose us!!! Have attached a photo of
them both.
Thank you for the work you are doing and hope you soon find
new accommodation.
Steve and Jayne. |
BENSON

|
Everybody
Loves Benson!
Hi
Vicky, Angela and everyone at DAWG Cork. Thought you might
like to see how I am doing in West Cork since I was adopted
by Margaret and Chris and their two rescue cats Omar and Felix.
I was so tiny when I came here and everyone was very worried
about me because I had been in contact with a dreadful virus
called Parvo but thankfully I did not contract the virus much
to the relief of everyone. My new family simply adore me and
shower me with lots of hugs and kisses which I love. I am
told I have a great appetite for one so little and am particularly
partial to chicken. I love my walks on the beach and by the
river and have made many friends here including a cute sheep
dog called Jess and a Kerry Blue called Rascal who is teaching
me the ways of the world
I
get on very well with the cats though they fail to understand
my outgoing personality and are a little haughty. Still, my
adoptive folks are crazy about me and everyone I meet falls
madly in love with me. I have been told that I am funny so
I ham it up a bit and pretend to do very silly things which
seem to cause great mirth. I smile inwardly when Chris says
that it’s not possible to have brains and beauty though Margaret
does not seem amused!!
They
asked me to send a big THANK YOU! to Vicky for letting them
adopt me as I have brought such joy to their lives. They also
now want to find me a permanent companion. I can’t wait!
LOL

CHIEF
(previously Duke)

|
Since
Chief arrived he has been the most wonderful dog and is always
well behaved and a credit to his breed. Unfortunately the
week after he arrived our poor old collie dog lost his fight
for life and we had to say goodbye to him, having Chief has
stopped me moping about it as his needs still had to be met.
I usually go for a two mile run in the morning before I go
to work and he then sleeps in the flowerbeds til lunchtime
when he goes over the park for a quick run around and say
hello to his mates, he then gets another long walk in the
evening. He has just started his dog training and is doing
his bronze award for his good citizen certificate, the sit
stays still need a bit of work but he is coming on tremendously,
everyone who meets him loves him and at home he is a big soppy
mummies boy and follows you everywhere! Not easy sitting on
the loo with a large dog trying sit on your lap!!. He will
be going on holiday with us in a couple of weeks to cornwall
so I think he will have great time on the beach, our other
dogs had a great time last year and its how I would like to
remember them. We will keep updated from time to time to let
you know what hes been up to. Also we would like to how we
can help do some fundraising for you. Regards Dolores, Annabel.

TABU
(previously Ali)

|
Tabu
is with our family for the three weeks today and we are so
grateful to DAWG for allowing her to be part of our family.
When she came to us initially she was listless, detached and
insular both physically and in attitude, if we made eye contact
she would avert her eyes and pretend we weren’t there and
if we went to touch her she would either avoid or just freeze
rigidly. Her silence was deafening. She was the type of dog
who , no matter how much you wanted to , you could not shower
with affection because she was so afraid, it would have been
cruel. We knew her background but it was heart wrenching to
see the effect it had on our gorgeous dog. Three weeks on
and Tabu had made and continues to make progress on a daily
basis, she loves her cuddles, her naps in the sunshine, her
walks, her bed, her bones, and this week she is starting to
play games , get excited and bark. She has given our other
dog a new lease of life and they are now inseparable. Despite
her deafness she already understands basic commands.
What
a great blessing and what a great feeling we have to see this
little dog transform her attitude from being afraid of everybody
and everything to loving everybody and being curious about
everything. Thank you so much Vicki and Jane and everyone
at DAWG for giving us Tabu.
Little
TABU passed away unexpectedly, RIP precious girl and best
wishes to the family who gave you a very happy life.

LILY

|
We
LOVE Lily. She is absolutely gorgeous. She is my first
experience of a Golden Retriever/Labrador and I was amazed
how devoted she is. From the first afternoon we felt as though
we had her from puppyhood. She settled in beautifully - bosses
George (our other ‘rescue’ dog) and is a great member of the
family. It's lovely to have a dog who can enjoy our twenty
acres. She is completely bonded to me and lies at my feet
while I am working on a book on my computer and follows me
everywhere. She is a dog who loves to please and this makes
her very easy to handle. The whole family adore her.
My
grandson and daughter were here when we got her (and stayed
an extra week because of the airlines/volcano problem). Shane
is just seven and he had a wonderful holiday with Lily. She
is such an easy dog. She obeyed him all the time and he could
take her up the hill to play ball and down to the lake to
swim after a frisbee. I wish poor George would do the same
thing, but he is still a little insecure. He doesn't mind
going into the little fenced garden outside the kitchen door,
but otherwise he prefers to go for walks on the lead. If you
take him off the lead in the fields he runs for home!
Many
thanks for two such lovely dogs as George and Lily. |
MAC

|
Hi DAWG,
I
wanted to add Mac's story to your happy endings page.
We wanted to foster Mac as a puppy over Christmas 2009. The
day we collected him he got really sick and was only at home
with us for 2hours. It turned out he had Parvo and so did
his brother. Mac was so sick that we didn't think he would
survive and unfortunately his brother didn't. Once he was
well enough we took him home. He had to be fed on white fish
and boiled potato for weeks as his body couldn't handle any
other food and he was a small bundle of black fluff. He is
nearly 8 months old now and very healthy. He has bonded with
our other 2 dogs Jess and Ben Ben and they love playing together.
Mac is a gentle well behaved boy who loves to go for walks.
When we get to the green in Waterpark he takes his lead out
of your hand and walks himself. He gets a lot of looks and
laughs from passers by. He loves children and is really good
with my niece Emily (2yrs) and friends Ciara (7yrs)and Leah
(5yrs). He's our gentle bear. Thanks to DAWG for all the great
work you do and bringing Mac into our lives. Louise and Kevin

Just
thought you might like an update on Woody our GS. We got
Woody on a bitterly cold snowy day last January. He was
very poorly, malnourished and didn't have a lot of hair
to
keep him warm
in that weather. At the time we didn't know if we would be
able to keep him because we also have a cat and we were worried
they wouldn't get along. Reluctantly we gave him back and
he was to be rehomed in England. We were heartbroken to see
him go off and later that evening we contacted you to see
if we could get him back. Thanks to yourselves he arrived
back two days later and he is transformed. It took
until now to build him up and get his coat in a good condition.
He is still very nervous and is slowly "learning" to relax and
have fun.
Thanks again
to DAWG for bringing Woody back. He is a joy to have and we
are delighted with him....(and he's getting on great with
the cat!)...
I've attached
some recent photographs of Woody....
regards,Debra
and Peter

| CHARLIE

|
Charlie
is a very happy old boy. Avril a long time volunteer with
DAWG has taken him under her wing with her 4 other dogs,
where he will live out the rest of his days by the sea.
Avril tells us 'He loves lying in the sun with his new friends
my 4 other dogs. He is such a happy dog and so good. His
wounds and sores are healing well but we still have a bit
to go with his skin condition
but he is much improved. He loves his walk on the beach
and he will stay in the water as long as I keep throwing
sticks. Hopefully he will have many years here and he can
now retire in comfort
Update: Charlie
passed away peacefully recently. Thank you Avril for giving
him such a loving peaceful happy year. RIP Old boy. x

| HEIDI

Heidi
was found as a very nervous stray. 2 weeks ago she went
to a wonderful home in Wexford with another German Shepherd
called Boots. We recently received an email from Wexford
-
'She
has settled in so well! Herself and Boots are absolute
best buddies now. She is loving the country life and their
walks through our forestry - which happen usually twice
a day! She's been in for her shots and a once-over and is
in fine form.
Thanks again for everything
- we're really delighted to have her and love to her bits!
Hope you enjoy the pictures'.
All the best,
Reg and Deirdre

JESSIE

Message
from Colum age nine;
Thanks to Margaret
and Patricia for bringing Jessie all the way from Cork.
Jessie has
changed a lot since the first day she got here, she was very
nervous and jumped at every loud noise.
She loves long
walks by the river and in the Clare Glens, she tries to make
friends with every one she meets, people and dogs.
She is very
gentle and kind and we all love her very much. |
BLARNEY

|
Dear
All, I have Blarney a JRT or as my friend calls him a Jack Russell
terrorist lol. I got Blarney from Dogs Trust at Canterbury in
Kent his vaccination card says he is 4 years old I know he comes
from you as I have his vaccination card. I went to dogs trust
to take some toys food blankets etc over just after Xmas as
I already have 2 rescue golden retriever that come from Ireland
Daisy & Charlie the were rescued by Irish Retriever rescue
and shipped over both have had bad life's not now spoiled and
loved.
Anyway I have always loved JRT and I saw poor Blarney in a kennel
with another JRT she was only about 6 months old and she was
jumping all over him he looked so depressed poor boy so would
could I do my husband said no we can't have another dog !! poor
Blarney had not been looked at they think due to his leg and
hip problem's. But you should see him run now more like a greyhound
and he can jump on our bed ok and chase cats and frogs in the
garden.
He has been going to training school to socialise him and he
is one of the best in the class he takes his bronze next week
and I had not sent this e-mail yet and he passed his bronze
last night with flying colours.:-)
I love my dogs they are my life and when I retire I hope to
foster as well and pray I am not a failed foster.
Regards Maggie |
LOLA

Just
thought I'd update you on Lola's progress!
When
she arrived she was so nervous and did an awful lot of chewing
of doors but now she's more than settled and like another
child!
She's
so affectionate and gentle and loves to play. She most definitely
likes her home comforts and frequents the couch and anywhere
cosy.We absolutely adore her and couldn't imagine not having
her around. I would highly recommend a Staffie for a family
dog for their sheer gentleness, loyalty and intelligence.
Thanks
a million for all your good advice and for giving us Lola

BRODY

|
Hi
All,
Brody
(was Brady) is settling in very well and gets on great with
all our family and all our dogs too. He is making a great
difference in wolfhound Cait's life and she is taking much
more interest in things and her great depression is lifting
at last!! She is once again a happy dog, and Brody just thinks
life's a blast, loving his new toys and playing like a puppy,
we love him. He is putting on weight and will be going to
the vet in about one weeks time for neutering and we are having
him microchipped at the same time. I will keep you updated
on Brody's new life.

TESS

|
Hello!
We
just wanted to let you know how Tess is getting on! She has
been with us 2 weeks on friday and she is absolutely gorgeous
& we love her to bits! She is no longer timid and is getting
really playful and puppyish! She gets on great with my parents
greyhounds especially Minnie- in photo cuddled up together!
She sleeps in our room in her own bed and jumps on the bed
as soon as my alarm goes off to wake us up with licks! We
take her for a long walk every day & we've started training
her too- she very intelligent and already knows sit, lie down
and stay, and we trying to train her to be good on the lead
too. She is very clean and always lets us know if she needs
to go out to toilet. She loves being around other dogs so
hopefully soon we will be able to get her a little friend!
She is gradually getting to know our cats too, she a very
sweet affectionate natured dog & we delighted she in our
family!
Will Keep in touch

QUILL

|
Quill was
another long stay of ours. Of couse being a staffie was one
reason as they are so misunderstood and the other was that
for reasons unknown to us, Quill suffered from terrible separation
anxiety. She literally hated being alone. We all cheered when
Quill recently was adopted by Patricia. Patricia was looking
for a constant companion. One of our volunteers went to visit
Quill last week and reports that she is very happy, sometimes
sleeps on the bed with her new Mum, waits at door to get her
feet wiped when she has been out, and when our volunteer Jane
asked Patricia why she chose a staffie, her reply was because
they are so good with people! Thank you so much Patricia for
giving Quill the chance to prove herself a loyal friend.

GEORGE

|
Dear
Margaret and Patricia,
We’ve
now had the German shepherd dog, George, for over a fortnight
and I thought I would tell you how he is getting on. He seems
devoted to both of us and equally so to our son who is in Galway
for most of the week but is around to take George for walks
at the weekend.
He is a clever dog and he has now learned his name, to come
when he is called, to sit and to lie down on command. He seems
to be quite a non-dominant dog and now totally accepts the ‘house
rules’ like not taking things from the worktops or the table
(which he was inclined to do for the first day or two) or going
into the bedrooms. He doesn’t jump up on people, but just wags
his tail politely.
George has a lovely temperament and seems friendly to everyone
– except cats!
Physically he is doing well. George is no longer so bony and
his coat has begun to shine. You will be interested to hear
that he loves walks. For the first few days, he really didn’t
like them, but then he started to enjoy them and now his tail
wags when you touch the lead.
I’m hoping to train him to play as he has no idea of what to
do with a ball, or a chasing toy. I don’t think that we’ll allow
him to be loose until he is hooked on a toy – I always find
this is a great way of keeping a dog’s attention.
All in all, we are delighted with him. It was a sudden impulse
to look at the rescue dog section as we were so upset at losing
our magnificent German shepherd when he was under five years
old. I thought it would be irresponsible to get another puppy
since we are over seventy, so George is absolutely ideal for
us. What is wonderful is that he now seems such a happy dog
– if you look at him when he is in his bed, he just wags his
tail.
With very best wishes, and much thanks,
Cora & Frank

SOOKIE

Dear
All, I thought I would send this on - this is Sookie (was
Tiny) that we adopted from your website on August (was living
with Margaret) - she went all the way to Coleraine and has
become an adored family member. She's been getting to grips
with the snow and having a
ball. My father in law who is terminally ill,has fallen completely
in love with her - she is taken to visit him each day where
she curls up with him on the bed for some TLC - she is providing
much joy to someone who can no longer leave the home.

Lolabelle

|
Dear
all,
We recently adopted Lola or Lolabelle as we like to call her
now.(Originally Tilly). We would just like to say thank you
for this wonderful girl and she really is thriving and coming
out of her shell more and more with her new life with us.
We absolutely adore her. She is a typical Staffy, loving,
playful and always keen for lots of walks. She has brought us
so much happiness and thank you to all at Dawg and expecially Alice
who took her whilst she was waiting for her forever home with
us. Here is a pic of her with her kind face, we love her loads

BENJI

|
Hello
to all at DAWG,
Just
to let you know that Benji has really settled and become a central
part of our family. It seem as if he has always been with us.
We took him for his first walk on the beach on Sunday and he
loved it. He was very well behaved and didnt let us down in
any department. He loves the company of all the family and
loves our garden. Life was so dull without a dog in the house
and thank you all so much for the great work you do and for
giving us the opportunity to be able to get such a great dog.
I am enclosing a few photo to let you see how well and happy
he looks and my daughter absolutely loves him to bits. Thanks
to Angela for approving us and bringing Benji to the City.
Love and Happy Christmas, Maeve |

| OSCAR

|
Many
of you will remember Oscar (formerly called Rossy Bear) who
came to us in the most appalling condition
having being used in fighting. This gentle boy was near death’s
door when we rescued him and we were heartbroken at his suffering.
A wonderful lady called Joanne from the Isle of Man adopted
Oscar and took him into her home and most definitely her heart.
This boy now has a life that so many rescue dogs dream of,
long walks on the beach with his family of dogs, bed by the
fire, lovely meals and most of all the love and care he so
richly deserves. Looking at Oscar now it reinforces for us
at DAWG why we do what we do every single day. (The pictures
are of Oscar with two of his best friends Tom Tom the cat
and Taylor. ) |
| GEMMA

|
Gemma's is
a very happy ending that needs to be shared. Her family came
all the way over from Bensheim, Germany to give her a new
home. She now shares her home with 8 other greyhounds as her
new brother and sisters. She has been given such a wonderful
2nd chance with Horst and Gabi and we are eternally grateful
to them for making such a huge effort to come and get her
and for their patience as it took time to organise. She has
such a happy life now and enjoys her beach family holiday
once a year. It doesnt stop there, Gabi and Horst are now
looking to bring another greyhound into their family due to
the death of one of their much loved pets. Also, Gabi paints
stones and sells them and donates some of the proceeds to
DAWG on an ongoing basis. Thank you so much Gabi and Horst.

RUSTY

|
Rusty
is so happy in his new home in West Cork! He loves to race along
the beach at Inchydoney and Long Strand with my two other dogs
(Murphy and Finn). He has even made friends with my two chickens,
and checks the coop with me for fresh eggs every morning. He
enjoys being groomed and his red coat is looking great. I love
Irish Terriers, and to find one seven months after the loss
of my previous one (Hogan, aged nearly 13) is a real blessing.
We hope for many happy years together.

ZEUS

|
Hi Everyone at DAWG, Doneraile,
Bet you guys thought I had forgotten you! No way, I was just
a little busy with my new family to get in touch.
I am now called Zeus,and I am still a busy little boy,running
here and there to check things out. I have settled in really
well and am spoilt rotten! I get to sit on Joy's lap and watch
Tv every night, Stephen takes me for walks with Xena, who is
my best friend, she is a collie cross 2 yrs old and thinks she
knows everything! she even tells me when to go outside and pee
and if I dont do it fast enough for her ladyship, she comes
and drags me inside by my collar.... the indignity of it! and
me 5yrs older than her... I have heard Stephen say she thinks
she is the enforcer.... did I mention the cats? well when I
first met those two I thought they were for chasing, but I soon
discovered they had claws, so for self preservation I decided
to stick to chasing a ball. Shadow cat, is a holy terror I stay
well out of her way, But pushkin the other cat and I are now
best friends we even sleep on the couch together now.
I have included some pics of my camper holiday this year, Xena
and me had great fun.... I love rabbit holes... digging n' digging
you can still see the sand on my fur Stephen had to come and
pull me out of bunny heaven, because i kept ignoring his call.
There is one of Xena and me at the beach.... boy what a wonderful
place...I love playing with the waves.
A big lick to all my friends in Doneraile,
ZEUS xxxxxxx

Update
on our gentle Annie

|
Wonderful
news for Annie she has been adopted by a lovely lady in the
UK called Pauline. She has a lovely big garden to potter around
with and other greyhound friends for company, most of all
she is in a home where she will know nothing other than love
and care for the rest of her days. Sadly we do not know how
long
Annie
will live for but we hope and pray that she at least knows
a few years of the wonderful life she has just landed in.
Her foster Mum Pauline told us ' We are amazed at how much
we love her so quickly, if that makes sense. I couldn't possibly
think of life without her now, she is just wonderful and we
can't thank you enough'. |
Dillon

|
We
adopted Dillon on 19th April 2009 from Cork DAWG. He is a
7 month old greyhound boy. We have always had rescue dogs,
as I feel it is dreadful that so many dogs are destroyed needlessly,
I would never purchase a dog from a breeder. In 1997 I adopted
my first rescue greyhound called Bessie, a big beautiful blue
girl who had been picked up as a stray in an appalling condition,
it was due to Bessie that I began fundraising and raising
awareness for greyhounds. Bessie sadly passed away in 2007
aged 13, gone, but not forgotten we will meet at rainbow bridge
again one day! nds all day taking them out in the garden,
and I spend all evening bringing them back in again! When
we take him out for a walk he is truly amazed at the big wide
world and he is surprised when he spots another 'non-greyhound'
type dog. Greyhounds that work are kept in kennels, so never
see other dogs at all, so they are quite perplexed when they
first see other breeds of dogs. He loves his food and gets
on well with Peggy and Alfie. When out for a walk now, he
likes to follow Alfie and as soon as he cocks his leg for
a wee, Dillon then copies him in the same place, he is so
funny.
I
cannot promote greyhounds highly enough, they make the most
wonderful ideal pet. They get on well with other dogs generally
(obviously, you would need to take care around very small
dogs), they tend to walk at your own pace, they are gentle
and laid back. They are extremely affectionate and loving.
They easily adapt to the home environment and learn quickly,
they love their home comforts. I have never had a problem
with house training as they tend to be clean dogs by nature.
They hardly moult at all as they are short haired. Greyhounds
are fantastic with children and the elderly, I had Bessie
when my daughter was only 18 months old and she was superb
with her, no problems at all. They can be trained to live
with cats, obviously some are better than others, but I do
know many people that have greyhounds with cats. As they are
sighthounds you need to take care when letting them have a
run off the lead. We live in West Yorkshire, and only have
a 10 min walk then we are on the moors, the dogs love to have
a run and their recall is good. However, we are careful where
we let them off as most will chase rabbits, cats, etc if given
the chance, even if not trained to do so as it is there natural
instinct.
|

Cork
DAWG do a wonderful job in helping dogs such as Dillon
with the rehabilitation, care then re-homing them. Please
support them with their essential work, so many dogs need
their help. If you are in a position to adopt a dog then please
consider a greyhound, I promise it is not a decision you will
regret, they just need a chance. But beware greyhounds are
very addictive, you will not be able to stop at having just
the one!!

CHUTNEY

|
We
had great news about Chutney who went to a wonderful new home
in Jersey. Remember she was found at the bottom of a barrel?
Just
to let you know that Mark arrived home last night with little
Chutney; she is absolutely adorable and has been running around
our house like a wild thing!! We kept her in our room last
night in her box and she was quiet for most of the night,
apart from a bit of growling with was very funny and I have
no idea why, think she just wanted attention!!
She seemed very hungry but we are keeping her on dried food
for now as a risk of an upset tummy is probable given the
changes. She is going to our local vets tomorrow to be checked
out and they will register her there and tell us if we can
vary her diet a bit more. We used to give Woody scrambled
eggs when he was a puppy and he loved them. I did give her
some tiny pieces of chicken which she thought was amazing!
This morning when I left she was dive bombing Woody in his
bed and he seemed to be getting used to her so lets hope they
will be great friends!! She certainly is loving all his toys.
Last night she took them one by one and hid them in her basket!!
Anyway thanks so much for all your efforts, we will take care
of her and she will have a fantastic life in Jersey. Take
Care , Mark & Lyndsay
Thank you
so much Mark and Lyndsey for offering such a wonderful happy
ending to Chutney! |

NEWS
ON BLUEBELL

|
Dear
All at DAWG,
Bluebell is the sweetest girl. I have never owned a greyhound
before and to find her so loyal and loving has surprised and
delighted me. She is clean in the house, eats whatever I feed
her and is great with our cat and cresteds. She comes to call
on our walks and never really lets me out of her sight.
At
night, Blue sleeps on my bed with her face close to me. My
DAWG gang (see story below) are a constant pleasure, I am
so lucky to have these fabulous animals in my life. I get
very sad when I am grooming her and see the pressure scars
on her legs;my poor baby must have spent most of her life
lying on the concrete with nothing to protect her skin.
I
can only be grateful that she was not destroyed;like so many
of her friends; found by a sanctuary like DAWG and then came
home to me. Now she only runs for her own pleasure (and the
odd dog walker on the beach). I can't describe how wonderful
she looks;and then she runs to me for a hug.
Thank
you. Love Jan. |
