Cork
DAWG is an organisation founded and
run completely by a network of volunteers concerned with the welfare
of abandoned, abused
and
ill-treated dogs in Cork.
Through our collective experience we aim to improve
the lives of Cork's dogs and also endeavour to educate the public
on dog welfare and dog ownership.
We are urging people not to forget our " 5 to survive" campaign. The last three months have been the busiest months we have ever experienced in DAWG. We are desperately struggling to cope with the amount of dogs needing our help.
Every second phonecall we receive is about a dog in need. Its seems the recession has hit us hard and unfortunately it is the dogs that are suffering.
We will do everything we can to continue to help these animals but we cannot do it without your help.
We are currently now at 50 new standing orders, we are extremely grateful to everyone who signed up but we are still along way off our target of 500.
Please help us to help them and sign up to our standing order of 5 Euro a month.
Please take a look at the video above, it will show you were your 5 Euro a month goes and the difference it can make.
Standing orders can be printed online or alternatively you can contact us via e.mail at info@dogactionwelfaregroup.ie or text us on 0863457488

DAWG
Christmas Card Competition
This
year we have decided to do something different and we all agree
that we would love to have Christmassy pictures of your dogs on
our Christmas cards this year! These do not have to be dogs adopted
from us but of course it would be great to see pictures of the dogs
that have come our way. We have 6 slots to fill as we include 6
different images per pack of cards each year. So we are looking
for Christmas/winter images of your dogs by 3rd Sept 2010 at the
latest. It is essential that these images are high resolution (300dpi
preferred) otherwise our printer will not be able to use them. (for
more info on high resolution please go to http://www.longwoods.com/articles/images/

We look forward to seeing the photos come in. Best of luck!!
MEG's Story.
Meg
is a 5 year old ex-racing greyhound. She came to us 10 days
ago after we intervened and stopped her going to the pound.
When she arrived she was full of fleas and very underweight.
It was obvious the minute we saw her that she was in pup and
didn't have long to go. Poor Meg was very depressed and we were
worried for her. She was very thin to have to endure having
pups. We gave her a warm bed, treated her flea infestation and
waited for nature to take its course.
Meg gave birth to seven beautiful puppies five days ago. She
is an
excellent mother.
She is still so thin despite us feeding her the best of food,
her poor body is weak and frail from a lifetime of neglect.
We are doing everything we can to help make Meg as comfortable
as possible. She is so gentle and loving.
Meg is just another typical example of the way greyhounds can
be treated in this country. Can you imagine Meg's fate if she
had ended up in the pound. Her and her unborn babies wouldn't
have stood a chance.
Please keep meg in your thoughts and we all pray that she will
have the strength to continue to look after her pups.

Why is
Bella still waiting?
Bella
has been in foster for some months now and is so ready for her new
home. Bella is a 2yr staff/ lab. When Bella came to us first she
had a few behavioural problems but her foster mum has worked with
her and she is now an excellent dog. She adores people and loves
playing with other dogs. Bella has a small deformity to her face, but
this does not cause her any problems. The vet said that as a pup
she must have received a blow to the head from a heavy object and
it caused her jaw to get misaligned. Bella is an energetic dog who
loves to go for long walks. She is housetrained and good in the
car. She is now the perfect pet and we would love to see her happy
in her forever home as she deserves it so much. She would suit an
active home with children over 12.
Please
help DAWG in its " 5 to
survive " campaign.
We
are experiencing very tough times at DAWG and we desperately need
to increase our income to enable us to continue to rescue and rehome
the so many dogs that need our help.
We
are calling on all our supporters to help us in our " 5
to survive campaign". We are asking for 5
minutes of your time to complete a standing order of 5
Euro a month and help us achieve our target of 500
new standing orders. This money
will go directly to help the dogs that need it and it will enable
us to continue our work. Our target will
be posted on our website and will be updated weekly. In
return for signing up DAWG will send each new member a thank you
pack including your very own DAWG postcard, keyring and magnet.
Please help us achieve our goal and reach our target.
Once we reach our target ALL our standing order supporters
will be entered into a draw. More details on the draw will follow.
Also for those of our supporters who already have a standing order
with DAWG, please email and we will forward you our thank you pack.
The dogs of Cork need us so we cannot let them down. THANK
YOU.

Sometimes
even dog dreams do come true
When
we look at the pictures of Tessie one of our special rescues cases
it makes the often sad and distressing work of rescue worthwhile.
This sweet girl came from a horrific place, then ended up in a pound
where she would have been put down. Tessie was very nervous and
scared of people. When she came to us at DAWG she was lucky to find
herself in a foster home where over months of love and attention
she slowly came out of her shell and learned to trust again. We
wanted a very special home for Tessie, given what she had been through
our wish was that she would only know in future a life filled with
love and kindness. Sinead & Garry were the answer to our prayers,
this wonderful couple with their other rescue dog Honey took Tessie
into their home and most definitely their hearts. “Tessie is one
of the family now, we couldn’t be without her”.

WEDDING
FAVOURS?
Recently
we were contacted by a bride- to- be who wanted to donate to DAWG
instead of placing wedding favours on the tables for the guests.
Laura the bride to be asked us if we could organise cards that she
could place on the tables informing the guests of the charity she
was choosing to donate to. Which we did, see picture of one example.
Thank you so much Laura, its an excellent fundraising idea and we
look forward to seeing a wedding photo!!!
CORK
DAWG fundraise for new sanctuary.
We
have very bad news to report. Unfortunately we are going to lose
our much loved shelter. As some of you might know over the last
few years we have been renting a premises where we house all of
the unwanted and abandoned dogs that come into our care. This property
has now gone up for sale so we need to find a new property asap.
We are calling on all our supporters to help us in this very difficult
time. We cannot stand back and do nothing, the need is too great.
At any one time we have over 30 dogs in our care with at least another
10 waiting to come in. We are averaging 600 dogs a year that need
our help. If Cork DAWG does not have a safe haven for these dogs
to go then what will happen to them? The local pound? The side of
the road? Or a visit to the vet to be euthanised? This can't happen.
We appreciate that these current times are hard for everyone and
nobody has much to spare but we are not proud and are begging for
help, no matter how small.
It has always been our dream to have our own shelter, a place where
a dog can call home, where it will be loved and cared for, and for
a lot of dogs it will be the first time in their lives where they
have been shown compassion by a human. Unfortunately as with most
things in life to achieve this we need money. The constant fundraising
events that we hold are just about covering our vet and food bills
so there is nothing to spare.
For now we will stay optimistic and do whatever we can to make this
dream a reality.
And when the days comes that DAWG does have their owm shelter im
sure we will have a queue of wagging tails at the door!
If you are in a position to help us, you can donate on line. This
money will go directly to the purchase of a new property. We will
keep you posted over the coming weeks and months.
